White Stripes is really the only choice for me. Let’s see what everyone else thinks.
Not a strong list, opted for Finger Eleven. Before I go I should mention that this is where the Red Hot Chili Peppers were nosediving.
That Paralyzer song is a catchy little number, so it got my vote.
“Paralyzer” is the fucking worst song. I hate it so much. I remember really liking “Anna Molly” at the time, but I can’t remember a single thing about it now. Went with “Icky Thump.”
Alternative songs from '07 I liked:
Radiohead - 15 Step
Voxtrot - Introduction
Pelle Carlberg - I Love You, You Imbecile
Art Brut - Direct Hit
A Place To Bury Strangers - Missing You
Caribou - Melody Day
Patrick Wolf - Magic Position
St. Vincent - Paris Is Burning
Dinosaur Jr. - Almost Ready
Icky Thump, no question.
Going by my iTunes play count, Linkin Park - What I’ve Done.
However, I would also add to the list of generally good 2007 indie / alt rock:
Linkin Park - Leave Out All The Rest
Arcade Fire - Intervention
We’ve Got Everything - Modest Mouse
Fluorescent Adolescent - Arctic Monkey
Believe - The Bravery
I feel there needs to be a song from The National in there somewhere too.
The White Stripes always win.
I had to do some YouTubing on some of these songs, I had forgotten most of them.
Went with Foo Fighters.
Also rans from 2007 courtesy Playlist Research. Hate to say it, but nothing great there either.
“Fake Empire”/Boxer were from 2007, and really the first time I was aware of The National. Though I think other sings were singles first. My favorite song off the album were non-singles.
I’d probably take “Missed the Boat” from Modest Mouse
“Time Won’t Me Go”- Bravery
Wasn’t really a fan of Arcade Fire at the time because “Keep The Car Running” was overplayed and reminded me too much of some song from the 80s I didn’t like. But in retrospect “Intervention” is a good pick.
From the “top” list I like:
MUSE - Starlight
From the others:
I guess the rest of the Muse singles, mostly- though I liked their previous stuff better.
SILVERSUN PICKUPS - Lazy Eye
WOLFMOTHER - Woman
THE SHINS - Phantom Limb
THE KILLERS - Shadowplay
THE KOOKS - Naive
THE WHITE STRIPES - You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)
COLD WAR KIDS - Hang Me Up To Dry
Weird how little I recognize, even from the longer list. Can’t vote in the poll, but from the longer list I’d have to go with Spoon’s “Don’t You Evah.” I wonder what the heck I must have been listening to that year.
All I can say is, the people who make up these lists had a whole different 2007 than I did. OK, I get that Amy Winehouse and K.T. Tunstall were on the regular pop list, rather than the alternative list, but my local alternative station (WRNR-FM, Annapolis, MD, if it matters) was playing the hell out of them in 2007. And even aside from that, where’s Guster? Where’s the Decemberists? The New Pornographers? Death Cab for Cutie? I’ve checked the lists for 2006 (pop and alternative) just to be sure I’m in the right year.
I remember all sorts of music from 2007, but the only two on the list I have any memory of are the RHCP and White Stripes songs, and I’m not gonna vote for either. Where do I get a vote down on “Myriad Harbor” or “Amsterdam” or “O Valencia”?
Same here, though my local alternative (Columbus,OH) also played most of the songs on the list. They do a top 100-something of the year countdown every year and a top 1000something of all-time. I should try to look it up.
However, they have never played any of the nu-metal and harder rock-ish stuff that’s on some of these lists.
Actually here it is. I think your mentioned bands/songs are on it:
Not all the songs, but just about all the bands. I’ll take what I can get.
AFAICT, WRNR has only preserved their top-103 lists for the past few years; I can find them back to 2011, even though they’ve been coming up with those end-of-year lists as long as I’ve been listening to them, and probably a good deal longer.
Pretty easy choice here with “Icky Thump,” but, were that not on the list, I probably would give it to the Foo Fighters. They’re an odd band for me. I don’t mind anything I’ve heard by them, but I’ve never gone out of my way to seek any of their music. But they write well-crafted, catchy pop songs, so I have to give them some credit.
There’s a lot of stuff that I remember pretty fondly on the longer list that SirRay linked: Tool, AFI, Linkin Park, Muse, Three Days Grace all had multiple good singles charting, though a lot of those were 2006 releases. One-hit type songs… I could still probably sing along with The Kill, Woman, and half a dozen more. I’d actually say that this was one of the last really great radio years for rock. For what it’s worth I voted for Paralyzer, but I was less in love with the #1s than with the depth of the year.
(But, uh, I listened to rock radio through most of the ‘00s, not indie/alt. I don’t usually get to these threads in time to post in a timely manner, but the last five or ten years’ worth of them has been indie/alt fans having the same discussion about not remembering and/or liking the songs… rock was still popular! They just happen to share the same chart even though they’re almost different genres entirely! You were ahead of the curve! Two or three more threads and we’re at your time!)
