For (I think) the second time in these polls, this is a year where I can’t even vote because I don’t even mildly like any of the songs. I guess Silversun Pickups would be closest to “good” for me, but not good enough. Let’s see what you guys have to say. And here are my picks for good alternative songs from 2009 that didn’t make the list:
Yo La Tengo - Here To Fall
Phoenix - Lisztomania
Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes
Crocodiles - I Wanna Kill
The King Khan & BBQ Show - I’ll Be Loving You
Bob Mould - I’m Sorry, Baby, But You Can’t Stand In My Light Anymore
Jay Reatard - It Ain’t Gonna Save Me
The Horrors - Who Can Say
St. Vincent - Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Falling Over (DJ Downfall Sprechenbann Mix)
“Uprising” for me as well. We begin to really see the shift in which styles are chart-topping-popular here, both in the poll choices and in the extended Playlist Research list. Rise Against - “Savior” being five years old makes me feel, well, old, and if it had gotten to #1 rather than peaking at #3 it would have been my vote. You can copy and paste that same sentence for Cage the Elephant - “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked”, complete with the same peak chart position.
I was a bit sceptical about Muse at first. I couldn’t quite shake off the feeling that they were some sort of Radiohead clones.
I now admit I was wrong: they have their own style and are very good at what they do whereas Radiohead have kind of lost their way after 2001 IMHO.
Uprising rocks, the synth melody is delightfully Doctor Who-esque and the guitar riff starting at 3:02 is one of the most infectious I’ve heard in years.
Listened to all, some I remembered others were a discovery. Kings of Leon were huge in 2009, “Notion” is better than their other two annoying singles. Liked Pearl Jam and especially Alice in Chains. It was that or Shinedown, and Shinedown got my vote. Do not care for the amuse song at all, sorry.
I went with Green Day here, in the end, with Silversun Pickups a close second. Not a fan of that Muse song. Don’t know what it is exactly about it–maybe it’s that little two-repeated-note guitar riff that makes me want to shout “Call Me” (from the Blondie song) every time I hear it. I just can’t unhear the Blondie when I hear that musical phrase. (And I like the Blondie song, it’s just a distracting little riff that takes me out of the Muse song.)
Please don’t bring Queen into the equation. I love Pink Floyd and am told that I should love Radiohead. I’ve tried and tried bit just cannot get into them. Now you tell me that as a huge Queen fan, I should like them.
There’s something about them that I just don’t get, but probably should. They just aren’t working for me for some reason.
