Again, nothing here I really listen to - guess I’ll go with Lonely Boy. Alternative songs from 2011 I liked:
Wild Flag - Romance
The Horrors - Still Life
Dum Dum Girls - Always Looking
St. Vincent - Cruel
Cut Copy - Need You Now
Mayer Hawthorne - The Walk
Toro Y Moi - Still Sound
Wire - Please Take
Jens Lekman - An Argument With Myself
Handsome Furs - Repatriated
The Bats - Spacejunk
I really liked El Camino in general, certainly enough to put Lonely Boy over the tenth best Linkin Park single or twentieth best Foo track or whatever. Cage the Elephant probably comes in second, and Pumped Up Kicks is at least a bit catchy.
This time I did my research in advance and reviewed the songs on the Billboard list when I had some time a few days ago. This time, instead of sucking badly like they did with Tighten Up, the Black Keys had a pretty good end of year entry with ‘Lonely Boy’.
However, IMO the Foo Fighters “Walk” just edged them out by a nose (helped with their absurdist “Falling Down” parody music video).
Also-rans for 2011 from Playlist Research. Perusing that list, I hadn’t realized at the time that Evanescence had come back with a new album then. Guess I have to do some more YouTubing…
My favorites from the also-rans list: Help Is On The Way, Sail, World So Cold, the two Avenged Sevenfold songs (and really that whole CD)… and I actually kind of like the Sixx:A.M. track.
Foster the People, Black Keys, Cold Play and Bush were the best songs. Voted for Cold Play both these charts and the pop charts, sadly I can’t vote because I already did vote in the 2008 polls even though “Paradise” is a strong song.
Cage is good and got my vote in 2010 but this song was weak. Foster’s single was ubiquitous in 2011 but they have better songs and their new stuff is even better. Normally don’t like Bush but this song was good. In the end I gave it to Black Keys.
