Best #1 single of the year retrospective: 2007

I’m launching this one a day early again, in order to prevent a scheduling conflict where one of the upcoming semi-finals polls would otherwise run on the same day that the final Billboard charts for 2014 come out.

Before we get to this year, though, I’d like to discuss that topic. Ever since I started this series back in August, we’ve been getting thousands and thousands phone calls and letters and telegrams* from all around the country asking what happens at the end of this series. With this poll, we’re a mere four more polls away from the grand finale, so I’ll address that in some detail here.

Firstly, as I mentioned above, the final Hot 100 for 2014 comes out on December 18th. When that chart comes, we’ll be able to do the best-of survey for this year. In the future, I intend to continue running polls for each new year for the foreseeable future.

Secondly, once we’ve done the 2011 poll and fully caught up to the present day, we’ll be doing a best-of-the-decade series of polls for each decade in Hot 100 history; the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, and '10s (so far). Each of those polls will feature the song with the most votes from each year’s poll as of the time when I post the poll; in the event of a tie, both songs will make it on the list. (No years are currently tied, but the following years currently have polls that are within 5 votes of a tie; 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1974, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2004. So if you haven’t voted in one of those yet and a song you like is on the threshold, feel free to give it a push.) Once that series is done, we’ll do a final poll with the winners of those polls to determine the Official SDMB-Sanctioned Greatest #1 Jam Of All Time (For Now). After that… we’ll see.

Now that that’s out of the way, on to the poll itself. It is now 2007. With Beyoncé carrying over, there are eighteen songs to choose from. What’s your fave?

 • Well, five or six PMs, but my way of saying it was more dramatic

Previous polls: 1955-56 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2012 2013

I went with Fergie, ahead of Plain White T’s, Avril Lavigne.

A vote for Plain White T’s, so I don’t see the other songs again.

By this point, I had nearly completely given up on pop radio. The darkest hour was indeed just before dawn. “Stronger” is the only song here that I like.

“Hey There Delilah” is the easy pick for dead-ass last.

Went with Hey There Delilah because I had a dog named Delilah at the time, and it’s not a bad little song.

I’m going with “Umbrella” here because it’s literally the only song on the list I know except “Hey There, Delilah” which makes me want to burn things.

Under my um-brella, ella, ella!

It was the song of the summer that year for good reason. And it has a genuinely nice sentiment in the lyrics.

Reluctantly, Rihanna w/ Jay-Z - *Umbrella *.

I’ve skipped posting in the 2000-2006 threads because there was nothing even remotely attractive at #1 in those years. Now we have one of my favourite hits of the past 10 years, Hey There Delilah.

Kanye, followed by Rhianna. Actually, for disposable pop, not a bad year.

I don’t care how uncool this makes me appear, but the only song I could vote for from this list is “Hey There Delilah”. The rest of the songs on this list I was just completely unfamiliar with, or they just outright sucked.

I guess this is what is known as getting old?

I agree with both of your picks. If “Hey There Delilah” goes on to win this poll, it will be the worst song to do so in any year.

As someone who graduated high school in 2007, this music is especially relevant to me.

Hey There Delilah is an abysmal choice.

JT was my choice for the year, barely beating out Rihanna, Kanye in 3rd. Soulja Boy and Avril are guilty pleasures.

It really only lacks three things that would make it a great song:
1. a melody

 1. a rhythm

 2. halfway respectable lyrics
This was the second Worst Year of My Life (the first being 1991) and I was paying no attention to what was popular on the sound machine. I’ll have to vote after I have a chance to listen to this year.

Agreed.

Agreed.

This one is pretty easy for me again. “Umbrella” by Rihanna. One of the best pop songs of the 2000s, and representative of the decade. “Hey There Delilah” is another one of those songs that makes me irrationally angry.

Just doing my bit to keep Delilah at the top…

I’m with you all the way until you start mentioning everyone (except Kanye) after JT.

While JT was a no-brainer for me, Nelly Furtado, Beyoncé, and Alicia Keys all could’ve gotten my vote. All of their songs and Kanye’s wouldn’t get skipped on my iPod if I still used it.
