I’m looking for the best lager out there, in your opinion. It’s time to put aside the IBU’s and special hops-give me those slow cooked lagers, both light and dark, American and ferriner.
Original recipe Schlitz, in a can.
My current favorite lager is Real Ale’s Hans’ Pils. It’s hoppy for a lager, but it doesn’t come across all fruity or citrus-y.
It’s certainly not exotic or obscure, but I like Yuengling, myself.
I second the Yuengling. It isn’t fancy but it is what beer should taste like.
Full Sail Brewing makes Session dark lager (black label) and amber lager (red label). I think they’re both very good, but I don’t think they’re available nation-wide.
Their seasonal Fest (red) lager is very good as well.
I’m going to be boring, but for me, my one true lager love will always be Samuel Adams Boston Lager. I also quite enjoy Lagunitas Pils when I’m in the mood for something even a bit lighter, or a Weihenstephaner Original when going for that chewy, German, malty taste.
I prefer dark lagers. My favorite domestic is probably “Death and Taxes” from Moonlight Brewing. It’s draught only, and very tough to find unless you live within two hours or so of Santa Rosa, CA. Favorite import is Köstritzer Schwarzbier, which I believe is distributed in bottles nationwide.
My go-to everyday lighter stuff is Session, but I mainly drink Dos Equis Amber, Bohemia, and Negra Modelo anymore.
In the Czech Republic I like the Gambrinus 10 (which you can keep drinking for ever); or Urquell 12 if you only want to have a few.
In Germany Diebels is nice, but Warsteiner or any type of Kolsch will fir as well.
In Holland Brand, Gulpener, Hertog Jan or Grolsch.
In Belgium I refuse to drink lagers (and Jupiler and Stella suck anyway).
In russia I liked HeBckoe, but a few of the Baltika’s were ok as well.
In other countries: whatever they have.
Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier. It’s a Hefeweizen that is a lager. It’s one of my favorite beers in any category. It must be tried.
Are you sure it’s a lager? It definitely tastes like a weiss ale yeast in there.
From what I can find, it’s brewed with an ale yeast, and then may or may not be bottle conditioned with a lager yeast. This is the best I can find. I mean, the beer definitely has the tell-tale flavor of ale yeast (clove & banana.)
Brooklyn Lager is pretty good, but it is hard to find.
Sam Adams Boston Lager is my favorite of easy to find beers.
I’m going out to Tom’s Pizza tonight-I’ll try the Sessions and maybe the Sam Adams.
DAB is the best lager.
Trust me on that, I used to be a professional beer taster.
But it is green bottles, so buy the enclosed cardboard 12 packs and protect them against light as though your life depended on it.
DAB is definitely drinkable, but I wouldn’t call it the best. The best beer is the one in front of me.
In about an hour, the “best beer” will be a Singha with my Thai food.
The best beer is “Free Beer”!
Nice find, pulykamell. My new answer is Ayinger Oktober Fest-Märzen.
I like Yuengling.
