A little info first, I am 21 years old, live at home with my parents, go to college, and work at Dollar Tree(dont laugh).
I have developed some rather sophisticated tastes for alcoholic bevrages.
Specifically single malt scotches,and Guiness.
I have tried maybe 6 diffetent single malts: Linsmore, Laphroaig, Glenfiddich, Auschentoshan(SP??) Cardhu, Glenlevet(sp?) maybe a few more, I cant remember.
Being that this is a great collection of people with good taste, What are some more good scotches for $50 or less.
If its really really good, you can go up to 100. Anything more, and its totally out of my budget.
Ya have to admit that it is rather odd that a 21 year old guy that has never been drunk, had a fondness for scotch.
Oh well, I am a wacky freak.
Try the Macallan (aged in sherry casks, gives it a sort of warm flavour). Comes in various incarnations and ages, but the low-end (8, 12, and 15 years old–“the kid”, “the dude”, and “the man”, respectively should be under $50 at most stores). Any of the “Glen-” incarnations are quite respectable, as is a weird one that I’ve only been able to find in a few stores-called Loch Dhu. Black as a lawyer’s heart and very peaty.
Indeed, any Macallan is a good choice. BTW, I didn’t know that there was an eight year-old variety. If you ever want to splurge, go for the 18 or 25 year-old stuff. Wow.
Still, my favourite remains Oban which has, IMHO, absolutely exquisite tastes. But not at all spicey or smokey which I find to be a turn-off. It used to cost about $50 Cdn but has risen recently to the $80 range (?about $50 US).
Some stores around here offer small sample bottles of single malts containing 3oz of the stuff. It’s a great and inexpensive way to find out what you like.
Father-in-law brought a bottle of Glenfarclas (Speyside, distilled by Grants)back from a trip some time ago. Magnificent, though not a malt for the faint-hearted. Have no idea as to price and availability.
