Beach Head, of course.
The Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy is up there.
One of my favourite sports games ever: Slap Shot. Fight!

Another big fan of Seven Cities of Gold here too. Last time I tried the emmulators they were still having difficulty with that game, and I was very disappointed.
I also spent countless hours trying to complete Jumpman Jr. I liked how he got impatient if you stopped moving.
Skate or Die
Winter Games - Great music in this one
Goonies - I loved how you had to figure out the puzzles and move all the guys around and stuff.
Here are a few that haven’t yet been mentioned:
Dino Eggs
Miner 2049er
Ghostbusters
Pooyan
Boulderdash
Championship Baseball
Spy vs. Spy
Strip Poker (I was 13. Whoa…)
Not a single mention of Mad Max? The BEST “flight sim”/shooter ever made, bar none. Also, all the Arkanoids were great, even if they weren’t original to the 64. And Raid On Bungling Bay was an all time classic. It took about 7 minutes to load, and was worth every second.
Yeah, a lot of the text-only games were on the Vic-20 too. I had one. 3.5K of memory, woot!
Man, such good memories. I’ll just mention a few that no one’s mentioned yet:
Phantasie
Temple of Asphai
Telengard
Yup. I started on cRPGs, and I’m still there. Kickass.
Quix
When I was a kid, I had a 64. My fave was Rick Dangerous. Ahh, the joys of platform jumping.
Impossible Mission
all Ultima titles
There was also one where you rode from city to city on a train as these little robots multiplied. You could only let them touch you so many times before you died. I can’t remember the name, just that it was really addictive.
I had a game called Nuke War which was pretty morbid. It was sort of Battleship-like and you place ICBM’s, Bombers, ABM’s and Submarines around your grid, then went back and forth with the Russians until a hot war started and you nuked the fark out of each other.
Anybody else play that one?
Wow, I was just re reading this, and realized that I made a huge mistake. That’s BLUE Max, not Mad. Very sorry.
Beachead, Commando, and 7 Cities of Gold.
Ah, those were the days. Although they weren’t then.
I’ll go with:
Starflight
Wasteland
California Games
Rocket Ranger
Ghostbusters
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
Is it more embarassing for you or for me that I can point out that this was, in fact, the last mini-game of Beach Head II? The first ended with you firing a cannon at multiple square targets, at different elevations, on a mound, at the top of which was the Overlord’s monster cannon.
But they were both seriously cool.
To this day, emulator and .c64 files in hand, I have still never been able to finish Roadwar 2000 or Roadwar Europa.
Dino Eggs was the time traveller saving dinos from extinction, wasn’t it? Damn, that was fun, too.
Mail Order Monsters was nifty, but the actual critter battles got kind of repetitive after a bit.
Telengard, that was the name of it. Everyone else constantly break-stopped the program to alter the character generation number generator, too, right? Start out with 400 h.p. or so, stats all in the high double/low triple figure range…
Right?
Gawd…Starflight…that brings back memories…
Beach Head was hilarious…
“You can’t hurt me…<thunk>…<thunk>…ahhhhhhh!”
Just remember as a kid thinking it was cool to hear the guys yell…“Medic!! I’m Hit!!”
Geez…that and dropping the parachutists too close to the ground so they splatted…
Bard’s Tale I and II
Pahntasie
The Gold Box Series
Might And Magic
No, but I did recently download an emulator with an immediate save/load option. Hmm, so prying the jewels at the throne summons a level 188 dragon king? Yeah, I think I won’t be doing that then…
I forgot how strong I got, but it was pretty damned strong. Of course, I could never find an inn at the deeper levels, so my level wasn’t that high, but my equipment was top draw.
Quix
Have you tried the Deluxe version for PC? Might have been for Mac too but I’m not sure.
Oh my. My cousin and I were just reliving those nostalgic days last night. He’s gone nuts and bought several audio CDs of remixed Commodore 64 game themes. That SID chip rocked!
Anyhow, my votes would be:
Archon (my all-time grand prize winner)
Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders
Pirates!
Montezuma’s Revenge
The Detective Game
Rockstar Ate My Hamster
Lazy Jones
Trolls & Tribulations
Hey, Max, don’t feel so bad about The Last V-8. The game was such a HUGE letdown. There’s only two screens of action. I think the bulk of the game was used up for the staticky sample “The Last V-8. Return to base immediately!” But how cool it was to hear our computers actually talking to us.
Sounds like you are describing Agent U.S.A. Not robots though, but people affected by the fuzz bomb. At least thats how I remmeber it.
I also loved M.U.L.E. I was a young kid at the time and had a pirated version with no instructions. I always took pride in the fact that I figured this game out well enough to be First Founder as a human without any guidance.
Also liked
Pirates!
Impossible Mission
All the Infocom text based games
Skool Daze (sp?)
Also I liked a game called something like “Suicide Train” which had a killer musical accompaniment. I can’t seem to find this game or its music anywhere.
