What would be the best case situations for the Democratic Party where they are politically strong and their policies strengthen the nation? Who would they have to nominate and elect and what policies would they have to enact? Ditto for Republicans.
Same answer for both: me.
For me, the best case scenario would involve the wholesale destruction of both parties with the emergence of several new parties in their wake. That’s the only way I can conceive of any real progress being made. However, I’d settle for a democratic party that was willing to grow a backbone and let go of the illusion that republicans will ever meet them in the middle, and I’d settle for a republican party divorced from the religious right and tea party crowd.
No one comes to mind on the Democratic side as someone strong and principled enough to garner enough support for the progressive changes needed to pull this country out of the political mud and move it forward again.
Republicans have proven they don’t need principles to get what they want; they don’t want the country to move forward and it is exactly what they’re getting. So any Republican who toes the political and philosophical conservative party line will do.
