Best cellular provider for GPRS phone?

I recently aquired an old sony-ericsson p910i and I’d like to use its basic internet capability. It supports GPRS only (no edge or cdma) and it uses Symbian v7.0 .

I’ve never owned a smartphone before so I have no idea what the best offerings for internet plans are. I don’t use my cell much so I don’t need a lot of minutes if that makes any difference.

I’d like to have your opinions on the matter.

Thank you for your time,

(Disclaimer: I don’t know how to up-to-date this is because it’s been a while since I’ve used GPRS)

In my limited experience, GPRS from any provider is too slow to be useful for much. I found Google over SMS to be easier and faster.

If you must stick with GPRS, I believe that only two providers offer it…

T-Mobile had OK reception (both voice and data). Customer support was horrible. Their plans, however, were very reasonably priced. As a T-Mobile customer, you can also get T-Mobile Hotspot access for cheap in case you want to bring a laptop for times when the phone isn’t enough.

Cingular had better reception and customer support, but their plans are more expensive.

However, since you’re only looking at GPRS and not the latest data techs, prices shouldn’t be too bad for either provider. Also, I think most providers offer a trial of some sort these days, so you can try them out and see which one you like better.

I’m mainly thinking of using the GPRS to get emails on the phone and the occasional Instant Messenging session. I’m hoping that both services are low-bandwidth enough not to be too painful to use over GPRS.

I could use some more answers so please pitch in if you have / had a data plan in the U.S

Thanks.

I ended up going with Cingular’s cheapest “Pick you Plan” option. since my phone doesn’t support CDMA or 850 Mhz GSM, my choices were fairly limited to begin with.

I might add a data package if they let me. Otherwise, I’ll do without.
