My wife (an iPhone 5 user) wants one of the new/larger iPhones. We are Verizon customers. Needless to say we don’t want to pay more than we have to. Will we have to purchase it from Verizon because we use their service? If not, can they be purchased competively or does Apple control pricing?
Apple controls pricing very tightly. You can buy a used one, but the price break won’t be that much, b/c iPhones are so sought after. You might get lucky and find a deal on Craigslist or some such, but it’s unlikely, and likely not worth the effort, given how little you’d save versus the time and effort you’d need.
