What is the best domain name registration service for personal websites?
I’m looking for a service that will register a dot-com for me, and then redirect traffic from my dot-com to my pre-existing website. http://www.JohnDoe.com —> http://www.geocites.com/jdoe347
From my quick research, I’ve found:
One’s probably as good as another. I’ve used register.com several times. They are $35/yr.
You really want two things: a) to own a domain, and b) to point it to your site. register.com will take care of #a. The pointing-it-to-your-site part will require the involvement of your existing hosting company (geocities.com in your example). There’s a good chance they’ll charge you for that, perhaps a one-time fee, perhaps a monthly fee. If you’d like to use the domain for e-mail as well, geocities.com will probably charge for that too.
They have domain registration for $25/yr, and no monthly fee for 1MB of space. They do have a fairly steep setup fee of $99. That last bit kind of sucks.
I use my local ISP for business clients, $39 setup. They don’t know what they are doing sometimes.
Other times I use WebJump because it costs nothing other than the name registration charges everyone has to pay anyway [$70 two years]. Then you get a free 25 meg weg site with cgi bin. But they do have an ad at the top of your pages thats why I only use them for a two year account of someones name, usually someone running for office (hint)
