Best drunk songs.

“Crush Story” was all over college radio here when it came out. A damn fine album.

Also wanted to second the entire Pogues catalogue.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOhIIIIIIIIIIIIII’m stay’n alive
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOhIIIIIIIIIIIIII’m stay’n alive

At least that’s what I remember the drunks wailing when I was an undergrad.

I never knew the name of that one, who wrote it, or who covered it!

“Good Night Irene”, with additional lurid pornographic verses.

Sweet Virginia by The Rolling Stones has always been my group of friends official “Night of Drunken Debauchery Feel-Good Song”

I’m very surprised no one has mentioned it yet, although it may be more of a stoner song, but Rainy Day Women 12 & 35 by Bob Dylan seems perfect, given that the chorus is a bunch of drunken session musicians singing “EVERYONE MUST GET STONED!” complete with a sleazy New Orleans style horn section for the chorus. Legend has it that to get those straight laced Nashville session musicians to sound authentically trashed, Bob took them all out for a night on the town consisting of ingesting copious amounts of weed and beer before recording.

On a darker note, Tom Waits entire catologue may suffice if your one of those kinds of drinkers.

Hey An Gadaí,

I just now found out that Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners died recently. Damned. Every one of his songs was a drinking song!

You might remember (or maybe not) that I spent a couple of years in Northern Ireland as a kid. My dad had a few of the Dubliners albums and I bought some on CD a few decades ago. My God, Ronnie’s voice was incredible. Like an Irish Johnny Cash, really.

RIP Ronnie.

When The Little Man with the Hammer
Starts to hit you with all his might
You can bet your boots and your Sunday suits
You got a little tight

When The Little Man with the Hammer
Comes to reorganize your head
Then there ain’t no pills gonna cure your ills
You might as well be dead

When it’s after one and you’re havin’ fun
You never give a hang
But I bet you say at the break of day
“Here come the British with a Bang! Bang!”

It’s The Little Man with the Hammer
Always tryin’ to pick a fight
So it’s lift your cup with the bottom up
We’ll wear him out tonight

-Pee Wee Hunt with the Casa Loma Band, 1935

Yeah I started a thread about it. I was torn up about it, which is unusual for me, I’m not a cry-when-celebrity-dies type. I saw him in concert last December. I think it might have been his last proper gig. He only did a few songs but it was amazing.

My favorite thing to listen to when I’m drunk and in a playful mood is Minor Threat. The unpredictability of it always surprised me for the first time when I’m three sheets to the wind and I get a kick out of listening to straightedge wasted.

But for more conventional stuff, the music that’s most improved by being drunk is definitely country, although I certainly would be more likely to let people know if it didn’t come up to my (looser) standards.

Never got a chance to hear Celtic or Celtic-influenced music when drunk, but that would probably be the best overall (not ironic or most improved.) Unfortunately, the Irish pub I go to every year as part of an online group get-together always chooses Sunday to be “ballad night”, not “in your face rockin’ out Irish dance music” night

Another good one just coughed up by the iPod: Drive-By Truckers’ “Women Without Whiskey”:

The bottle ain’t to blame and I ain’t trying to
It can’t make you do a thing, it just lets you…

More of a drinking regrets thing, but regrets are part of it, eh?

I think the country-sounding song “Alcohol” mentioned on the first page would be by the Barenaked Ladies. If not, that song is still good.

Also, there’s “My Alcoholic Friends” by the Dresden Dolls and there’s always “The Alabama Song” (lots of versions of this one)

Oh show me the way to the next whiskey bar…

An unofficial anthem for my ex colleagues and myself was American Pie which when drunk as rats we belted out THIS’LL BE THE DAY THAT I DIE OH THIS’LL BE THE DAY THAT I DIE was almost a self fulfilling prophecy as it made anyone who could hear us want to kill us just to shut us up.
Oh and I vote for Wild Rover and Chumbawumba as well.

Here’s one of my favorites. I’ve seen the band do this song live a dozen plus times and it’s the kind of fast swamp blues that makes you want to get up and dance around. In a more just world this would be an anthem, because live, the sight of drunk (and sober) folks crazily bouncing like overjoyed loons to this song is an amazing and quite wonderful sight. Anyone who listens to this song and doesn’t at the very least tap their toes is most likely dead.

My Old Man Boogie by Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band
(MySpace link - the song is on the player, just scroll down)

My old man he’s drunk again
When he gets drunk he’s everybody’s friend
Everybody’s friend everybody’s friend
My old man he’s drunk again

Hey there Rev now you alright
but we’d rather hang with your old man tonight

Seconded. Also Barrett’s Privateers

Shitty intro, shitty video, but this is all I can find on youtube;

And also this kickass tune, a favourite in my neck of the woods;

LOTS of fun at Finnegans wake.

I never saw your thread… Linky?

Hank Williams Jr.'s “Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof”

The Dropkick Murphys’ “Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced”.
Also their “Skinhead on the MBTA”, “The Boys on the Docks”, “The Spicy McHaggis Jig”, and their salute to St. Paddy’s Day, “Assholes on Parade”.

Isn’t that by Travis Tritt? Or did Hank Jr. do a version? Here’s Travis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZahUZn4yJ4 (Beware the powerful mullet!)

I’ll add Gretchen Wilson’s “All Jacked Up” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IcT9H15JZw Couldn’t find a proper video for it, but man she sounds really good live.

Great stuff so far, and I do love me the entire Clancy/Makem/Dubliners catalog, but I have to put this one up there:
