The St. Patrick's Day Irish Drinking Song Thread

Please feel free to add your own!

Thanks

Quasi

My mom’s family came over to the US in the mid-1800’s.

Thousands Are Sailing ~ The Pogues

The Likes Of You ~ Flogging Molly

Take Her in Your Arms ~ Andy Stewart

Had a hard time finding one with good sound quality:

The Dubliners and the Pogues ~ Whiskey in the Jar

For the end of the night, The Parting Glass.

Previous thread that might be of interest.

DaVinci’s Notebook: Another Irish Drinking Song

An Gadi’

(Did I spell that right? I looked in my character map, but could not find the correct combination of keys!)

First of all, I wanted to tell you that I listened to every song you linked us to. EVERY one!

And, as I listened. I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or clap my hands, so I did all three. (I love The Pogues, even when they are sotted!)

And then I got to thinkin’. (Dangerous when Quas’ starts thinkin’:))

I’m German-American, and I have always taken “responsility” for the 6 million, even though I was born AFTER the war.

But, as I said: I got to thinkin’ - Aren’t ALL of us responsible for each other?

Sorry to rain on my own parade, but the song about the famine caught me up short.

God bless the Irish and God bless us all.

Your Friend

Bill

Is this too serious for the thread? The Chieftains’ latest album is San Patricio–inspired by the (mostly) Irish soldiers who deserted the US Army to fight for Mexico during the Mexican War. Ry Cooder is their main ally (The Chieftains’, not the solders!) & there’s a truly diverse list of guests.

NPR will let you listen to the whole thing if you clickhere.

Oh I’ve been meaning to pop into Claddagh Records and get this. Did I tell you I played a gig recently in a line up with Andy Irvine (of Planxty, Patrick Street, Mozaik fame). I can die a happy man now.

Dropkick Murphys with “Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced” and their paean to St. Paddy’s processions, “Assholes on Parade”.

I’ll get around to the classics later. But here’s one of my more modern faves, by Black 47:

Good Rats.

The Old Dun Cow. I’m used to it being a bit slower, as sung by Clam Chowder, but this is a good version.

Flogging Molly - Fuck You I’m Drunk
Flogging Molly - Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced
Flogging Molly = Drink And Fight
Bugger Off (I don’t know who did it)
The Dubliners - Seven Drunken Nights
Great Big Sea - The Night Pat Murphy Died
Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die
Under The Scotsman’s Kilt

That was GREAT!

Glad you liked it!

By the by… Isn’t the phrase “Irish Drinking Song” redundant?

How so?

Oh, you O’ Assholes!

I love the “River Dance” referell, as I, like a comedian, have always thought, they dance from the waist up, to keep from spilling their beer!

I love you little O’ Shits!

I really DO and I wouldn’t know what I’d do without y’all!

Sorry for the missspelling up there, but I tried to fix it, and it just doesn’t loook right either way… “Referral” or what?
Anyway, thanks!

I missed some in my list, not necessarily Irish, but they all fit the spirit:

Beer Beer Beer
A long time ago way back in history
When all there was to drink was nothin’ but cups o’ tea
Along came a man by the name o’ Charlie Mops
And he invented a wonderful drink and he made it outta hops

And Slim Dusty’s - Mad Jack’s Cockatoo

Finally for the Navy people, Great Big Sea & The Chieftains - Drunken Sailor

One of my favorite Clancy Brothers’ numbers:

Top of the Mornin’ to ya!
