Akira, by Geinoh Yamashirogumi.
I thought of a couple others:
Dead Man Walking --very bleak and harsh, took some getting used to!
Thelma & Louise --the music feels like the movie, plus it includes the brilliant “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” by Marianne Faithfull
Of course **Local Hero ** and **Cal ** are quality scores by Mark Knopfler.
i don’t really like soundtracks that are just collections of songs, because no matter how good the songs are, they usually just play like mix tapes. what’s the point, i ask. that is, unless the songs are written for the film. like saturday night fever! great songs. but as far as true film score music goes, i might have to choose amelie. the music is intense and it really compliments the cinematography.
Well, IMO, the soundtrack for Goodfellas, all old, recycled tunes, was a perfect complement to the movie and each scene within it. In fact, I’d actually say that the Goodfellas soundtrack was the best ever.
The soundtrack for The Italian Job. I was bopping along in the theater. Loved it!
Nino Rota’s Godfather saga soundtracks.
Ennio Morricone’s “Man With No Name” trilogy soundtracks (A Fist Full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly).
And, perhaps the greatest “unoriginal” film soundtrack: 2001: A Space Odyssey
add my vote! notice that they keep reusing the COD theme song for various movie trailers

Oops. Thought I had hit Stop in time. Oh well.
Royal Tenenbaums had a great soundtrack that fit what was happening. When they get to Needle In The Hay… yikes.
