Right out of the gate I think I have a winner - Bahn Thai (the east side location, please!) in Madison, Wisconsin. Ummm ummmm ummmmm…
I’ve tried Thai food in a lot of cities, including San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Chicago.
Bahn Thai beats 'em all. Where most places just do up some noodles & add a little tamarind & tofu, Bahn Thai creates a meal, a delight, a symphony of flavors and textures. P.S. Bangkok in Chicago is close, but lacks balance (plus a few ingredients).
I hate to give partial answers, but I remember I was watching the travel channel and it showed the “best” Thai restaurant in the USA. It is in Las Vegas, it isn’t a real fancy place, but apparently the food is as authentic as it gets. Somebody else will probably have more details.
Personally, I never liked Thai food. I guess I was expecting Chinese food(but im sure if i went to China, the Chinese food would be different.)
If you ate in Chicago, and didn’t eat at Arun’s Thai, then you didn’t eat at the finest Thai restaurant in the US.
I ate there once a year from 1980 or so until 1992. I’ve eaten in twenty different good Thai restaurants around the US, and Arun’s was simply the best.
Ah-Hah! Terrific! I’ll have to try Arun’s - Thanks samclem! But you only felt the need to dine there annually? When I lived in Madison, Bahn Thai was at least a monthly, if not bi-weekly, necessity (it helps that it’s cheap). If only it was an hour away, instead of 2+…
So far in Chicago I like Spoon Thai on Western (just north of Montrose) the best. But even their pad thai isn’t all that great (must add peanut sauce, must add lime) - it’s mostly their appetizers I like.
kgriffey79 it is different from Chinese, isn’t it. But now Chinese is a bit too bland for me - I want some zip & tingle going on! Put some cilantro in there or don’t bother talking about it!
