Best hippie music of all time

Methinks you mean “Surrealistic Pillow” - the Jefferson Airplane album that “Comin’ Back to Me” originates from. “Forever Changes” is an album by the L.A. band called “Love.” But actually, anything from either one of those albums (or those groups) would fit.

And I’d like to suggest you include some songs by the Staple Singers, who weren’t true hippies (they were more aligned with the Civil Rights movement) but did embrace the spirit of peace, love & brotherhood that is the essence of hippie flower power.

Some suggestions for “Staple” songs:

We’ll Get Over
Heavy Makes You Happy
Oh La Dee Da!
I Know a Place
If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)

Not to mention a fantastic rendition of “the Weight” (a song that is more commonly associated with the Band.)

triad by Airplane or CSNY

Can Black Sabbath be categorized as hippy music? If so, listen to anything from the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album. Otherwise, I’ll go with the Doors and the obvious choice, already mentioned a couple times in this this thread, “The End.”

My favorites have already been picked. For hippy music, I strongly recommend Itchycoo Park by The Small Faces, No Rain by Blind Melon and anything by the Grateful Dead, but especially Dark Star.

Let’s not forget that bit of weirdness called MacArthur Park, sung, oddly enough, by Richard Harris.

Say what?

Anything by Jimi Henrix ,The Doors and The Grateful Dead.

Lots of good ones so far. Two of my favorites:

Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses
The Yardbirds - Happenings Ten Years Time Ago

A lot of great and iconic music in this thread, but…

Most times I found myself in a room full of tie-dye and smoke, the music was something I’d NOT heard on the radio. A lot of it, I never (or at least, rarely) would. These are some of those.

Best of all time? Well…probably not, but maybe you’ll hear something you like anyway…

Affinity - All Along The Watchtower
If - Child of Storm
Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express - Whenever You’re Ready
Gypsy - Dead And Gone
The Mighty Groundhogs - The Grey Maze
Captain Beyond - Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of Air)
Cactus - Song For Aries
Temptations - Ball Of Confusion (That’s What The World Is Today)
Demian - Windy City
Krokodil - Lady Of Attraction

So real hippie music, you say? With a sitar and everything?

The Half Remarkable Question

Anyone else getting a contact high from this thread?

Spirit in the Sky might fit somewhere in this category. Maybe if you seperate AM and FM music.

Hypnotized by Fleetwood Mac

“Coming Into Los Angeles” by Arlo Guthrie

“She’s A Lady” or “The Room Nobody Lives In” by John Sebastian

We’re near the bottom of page 2, and no-one has mentioned:

“A Whiter Shade of Pale” - Procul Harum

My number one vote would be “Just Dropped In”–Kenny Rogers and the First Edition

Also

“Mama Told Me not to Come”–Three Dog Night

Now that I’m home, let’s see what my computer holds in the way of hippie music. Some that haven’t been mentioned:
*
For Your Love* - Yardbirds
Hesitation Blues - Janis Joplin
Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil -** Jefferson Airplane**
Bombay Calling -** It’s A Beautiful Day**
I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night - Electric Prunes

Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold
And I left his dead ass there by the road.*

with many 60s albums having 1/2 to 2/3 of the songs being hit quality for many groups i would guess the number of best songs be many hundred. over 200 might be listed here.

Yes, it’ll be a long list, and difficult to shorten to a “top 40.”

Good song. But we’re not even halfway through page 1 yet!

(Remember that people can change the number of posts per page in the User CP. I’m guessing from your comment that yours is set to 40. Mine is set to 200, so a thread that’s ten pages long to you would only be two pages long for me.)
