Best Internet-only source of news?

For that matter is there any Internet-only news source that is credible?

With the decline of the newspaper, and many of them shifting their emphasis to online news, I am wondering who they would be competing against. The only other news I check out is CNN or other big broadcasters.

I use Digg most of the time.

For standard news maybe AOL or Google news.

Digg, put politely, is citizen journalism – news by the people, for the people. Put impolitely, it’s mass hysteria. It’s like the pop-culture variant of Wikinews (think Wikipedia for news).

Google News is not a news source; it aggregates news from other sources.

AOL seems to use CNN and AP content. Does AOL have its own staff writers? (It’d be strange, since their parent company already owns CNN).

In the computer/tech world, there are sites like CNet’s News.com, but it’s definitely for a niche market. There are a lot of online-only niche news services, but I’m not sure about mainstream ones… hmm.

The New York Times
BBC - if you want the most up to the minute news about the US, the BBC can’t be beat. Well, it is a heck of a lot more timely than say the NYT.

lots of others.
I tend to read through the APnewswire and Reuters.

Err, what’s “Internet-only” about the NYT, BBC, AP, or Reuters?

Another vote for BBC. Good stuff.

Any good sources of local news (besides the local newspaper’s web site)? That’s what I’ve really been trying to find.

ETA: I live in the S.F. Bay Area, in the East Bay, to be specific.

www.bloomberg.com

Slate Intelligent, offbeat and with a serious news crew. Marginally inferior is Salon.

This http://www.reuters.com/ is where most other news “sources” get their news. Their mobile interface is particularly nice, being all but devoid of advertising.

This is one reason newspapers are going downhill: They no longer monopolize access to the wire reports. Instead, they package old wire stuff with a lot of stupid, non-targeted advertising. Papers would be a lot better off if they dumped wire stuff and syndicated content (columns and comics) and focused entirely on local, homegrown news and opinion.
