Best little known films

I find it interesting that the same person would like End of the World & Cook Theif etc. also some interesting films mentioned…ones that I enjoyed and some that I felt were dreck…I’m new so I choose to simply list some, plus a few of my own, without givig a ya or nay…LoneStar, Gun Crazy 1949, Burbs, Corvette Summer, HiWay 61, Bad Day At Badrock, Freaks, Pink Flamingos ( Cook Theif…pattern emerging?) 5000Fingers of Dr. T, 2 Lane Blacktop, 2 Days In the Valley…Excuse the dble post , but I’m new to this

Freeway. Straight to video over here in the UK. A very nasty film. Very good.

are you watching USA vs Poland futbol?..what did you think of the goal denied by official by USA’s Donovan ( I think) from right at PK range…I thought it was a poor call and possbly predicated on ( I’m being VERY kind here) geographic closeness of China & Korea

Wow…that was a cult film in Berlin…played at the same movie theater every night at midnight (might still be there for all I know) but I have never found it in the US…any idea if it has ever been on TV - I know it is not on video or DVD.
I was a little…uh…happier than normal…when friends took me to see this in Berlin…would love to see it again!

Brain Donors - http://us.imdb.com/Title?0103872
Sort of a Marx Brothers style comedy. Good pace thoughout the movie.

The Quiet Earth - http://us.imdb.com/Title?0089869
A guy wakes up to find himself the only person on earth. Kind of an interesting movie.

Fear of a Black Hat - http://us.imdb.com/Title?0106880
A good spinal tap style “rockumentary” but this one is about a rap band called “Niggers Wit’ Hats”.

The Man who Fell to Earth - http://us.imdb.com/Title?0074851
I’m always amased not many people have seen this film. David Bowie plays an alien with glue on nipples. Great film really, even if it does move slow at parts. A cool 70’s jazz soundtrack as well.

Zardoz - http://us.imdb.com/Title?0070948
A strange future movie with Sean Connery.

I’m sure I’ll think of more later

i do love kurosawa, but i love takeshi kitano more.
my all-time favourite movie is “hana bi”.

i also love “fish-eyed boy” (i think this is it’s english title, it’s about a boy who wears glasses and shoots people, intending to miss them)

i liked “amelie” too.

and i have to say i like “strictly ballroom” and “empire records”.

my favourite irish films are “into the west”, and “the commitments”.

I like a twisted black comedy every once in a while, so that qualifies the first one.
and im sure youre all going to tell me youve seen the second one multiple times, but so many people seem to have not seen it which baffles me. and the third, i love !

  1. Body Count.
  2. The Shawshank Redemption.
  3. What Dreams May Come.

I don’t believe it’s been mentioned: Being There (by the same director as the already-mentioned Harold and Maude). Sort of Forrest Gump-ish, only a lot more twisted, with dark humor and a surprising number of layers. I think it’s a far superior film.

Also believed unmentioned:
**Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
Dead Man
Rushmore
Bottle Rocket
**

I saw it many years ago on TV. I know it is on video, but you have to know somebody (it’s not ::ahem:: official). Cult film in Berlin, eh? Maybe for the court scene in which the DA says “anything you say will be held against you,” and Ole (or was it Chic?) says, “Marlene Dietrich!” As I said, many years since I last saw it. Was “Mrs. Jones” ever identified? Was it that potted tree? If you were…uh…happier than normal, maybe you don’t remember. Or maybe, if you were a little, shall we say “elevated,” this seemed more…uh…normal to you? Pretty crazy film as I remember it.

To find the video, ask around at video specialty stores, ones that carry old movies. If you make friends with the owner, you might have a shot at getting a copy. I only know this because a friend of a friend of…well, you get the picture. It can be had, but not over the counter. I don’t know why, if the film is on display in Germany, the video isn’t on the open market here. Good luck.

Zardoz

Where can you find Sean Connery running around in a loincloth, worshipping a HUGE FLYING STONE HEAD (hehehehe!), being hounded by naked women, and battling immortals? The seventies baby, the seventies…This little known sci-fi flick is a must-see if you can actually find it.

The definition of “little known” is a bit hazy here, but i suppose anything with subtitles is fair game

I agree with the people who mentioned Ring, Kikujiro, Cube and The Red Violin earlier

I enjoyed Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by hayao miyazaki (japanese title “kaze no tani no nausicaa”) I think it’s a lot less known than some of his other work (my neighbour totoro, princess mononoke, kiki’s delivery service) and IMHO very underappreciated

I also enjoyed Vampire Hunter D, another anime (you probably think i’m a freak, but it’s not all pokemon and sailor moon)

I saw a good made for tv movie gasp called “Cheaters” which was about cheating in the american high school system. the best ‘made for tv and based on a true story’ movie i have ever seen. good luck trying to find it

The best foreign film oscar winner (ok, hardly unknown, but how many ppl have actually seen it?) “No Man’s Land” was also really good

as was “The Princess and the Warrior” by Tom Tykwer, the same director as Run Lola Run

Peter’s Friends
The Events Leading Up To My Death
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

The Legend of 1900 - A movie about an orphan who grows up on a ship and is named 1900, the year the sailors found him and adopted him. While growing up on this cruise ship he learns to play the piano and such, though admittedly I only saw the latter half of it. The movie was awesome.

Um, make it three, Peyote Coyote, and I thought it was great.

Of course, the second time I saw it (rented), I watched it with my Mom and a friend of hers who is well past fifty, but still, um, shall we say, naive…

So, our friendly neighborhood succubus is doing the wild thang with her bisexual soon-to-be victim, and she climbs on top in order to, ah, approach him from the rear…

Bisexual soon-to’be victim: Hey, baby, where’d that come from?

Mom’s friend: Where’d what come from?

Me: (disbelieving stare)
OK, my favorites (at least those not already mentioned)

Eating Raoul a truly warped black comedy about a sexually repressed couple who, after being turned down for a loan, raise money to finance their dream of opening their own restaraunt by murdering swingers and rolling them for their cash.

Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. You live long enough, you’re bound to do some weird shit. 'Nuff said.

Tough Guys Don’t Dance. Seen it three times, still haven’t figured out what it’s about, but there’s sex, murder, a drug deal gone bad, more sex, more murder, and Ryan O’Neil is in it.

Boondock Saints is a helluva movie… And the obligatory foreign film. there’s this fabulous Irish movie called “I Went Down” that’s hysterical… One of my favorite caper movies… And BTW, anyone that knows if I can get it on DVD, post up!

It has been released on DVD!!! I think I found my copy at amazon.
