Best looking cowboy/western hats

There’s been some discussion in the Justified threads about Raylan’s and Boon’s hats and the efficacy of each.

Let’s identify some of the better actor/hat combinations to see if there’s any need for a poll or the like to determine the best one.

I happen to like the Raylan hat. I don’t care for the Boon hat.

Good hats:

  1. James Dean’s in Giant
  2. Gene Hackman’s in The French Connection (ok, not Western, just cool)
  3. any Eastwood hat
  4. Alan Ladd’s in Shane
  5. Jack Palance’s in the same movie

I know I’m leaving out some great ones, so help!

I liked Butch’s hat in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. But that’s probably mostly because I love everything about that movie and Paul Newman is The Coolest Guy Who Ever Lived. The hat is pretty plain, which I would guess was somewhat accurate for the time period. And I like narrow brimmed hats.

I like the Akubra in The Man from Snowy River, but this hat was perfect for Kirk Douglas.

Indiana Jones! Okay, that’s not cowboy, but it’s a cool hat.

John Wayne always looked good in a hat.

Specifically, John Wayne’s cavalry hat.

Gabby Hayes.

Sorry for not including pictures in the OP, so

  1. James Dean
  2. Gene Hackman
  3. Clint Eastwood
  4. Alan Ladd
  5. Jack Palance

I love that old falling apart cowboy hat James Stewart wore in almost every one of his Westerns (except for the Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and one or two others). I also liked the Panama he wore in a couple of his Western films.

Jake and Heath both had great hats.

Robert Duvall in Lonesome Dove.

Costner and Duvall in Open Range (one of the best Westerns made for TV ever!) Both guys have great tastes for hats!

Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now:

Indeed! Too cool!

I’ve thought of another movie where all the hats look perfect, especially Kurt Russell’s: Tombstone.

“The only rule out on the Veldt is Rule .303!”

Can’t believe someone beat me to it. Great minds etc.

For Honorable Mention Booby Prize, I nominate Kurt Russell in The Thing.

One of my favourite movies is a mad-as-a-box-of-frogs Thai western called Tears of the Black Tiger. It’s not just the hats that look cool; everything looks cool.

And all the cowpokes in Valley of the Gwangi rock their ten-gallons. (The dinosaurs…not so much.)
