TMP – I love that medievally-looking black outfit Spock is wearing when he first shows up on the Enterprise.
Search for Spock – Actually, I like this movie, but I especially like Kirk’s burgundy tux with the pleated shirt front, and Sulu’s caped outfit. (Chekov’s casual wear… not so much.)
Final Frontier – The campfire scene. Kirk dressed in his plaid shirt out camping in the woods looked just like my dad; my brother and I both noticed it the first time we saw this film in the theater and were delighted by it.
I don’t remember enough of the TNG films or later ones to say.
Three (intentionally) comedic bits worked that I remember.
Spock,when they’re camping: I am attempting to roast a marsh-melon.
McCoy, don’t remember when, but he’s alone: If I’m not careful I’ll end up being one of those people who talks to himself. (this was also a neat little nod to TOS, where he had a similar line).
When Spock does the Vulcan nerve pinch on a horse.
I agree with the music being the best part of ST:TMP. That interminable Enterprise reveal is actually quite nice when you’re just hearing the soundtrack.
I agreee that ths slow and close pass by the Enterprise still in dock was the best thing of the movie. I shoulda left immediately after and saved myself a lot of pain.
Dina Meyer is her usual hotness as a Romulan in Nemesis, though my personal favourite take-away from that film was the chance to make this post.
I can’t think of many redeeming elements from the other NextGen films. James Cromwell was good in First Contact and the scene where Troi is passing-out drunk was amusing, but I find the movies overall to be irritating.
Robin Curtis’s version of Saavik wasn’t nearly as well written as Kirstie Alley’s, but I can’t stay mad because I’ve met (and had a photo taken with) Curtis and she was charming.
I kinda liked that big ceremonial ship’s wheel on the Enterprise in ST: V. Kind of a nice touch. Beyond that, I’m kinda struggling to come up with something nice to say about that one.
I liked in the Final Frontier how the crew wears commando sweaters when they’re down on the hell planet. Although I question the idea of sending an older crew down to go fight everyone I like the fact that there are uniforms other than Class A’s.
TMP - the Klingons ! The (old) battle cruiser (not the birds of prey). I always thought these were way cooler than the Federation ships. And the “spine head” and their own language.
III Search for Spock. Amusing to see Reverend Jim as a Klingon. But overall there just wasn’t much to this one. I always thought this had an odd sub-plot. That basically Kirk’s son, who, along with his mother, are touted as geniuses for creating the Genesis planet at the end of II, is actually kind of a “hack”. That the science project is essentially a failure (except for being able to regenerate Spock’s body). And then the son is killed…but not by Khan, who would have had much more of a vendetta. Tragic, yes. But it seemed like a move just to get him out of the picture so as not to complicate further stories.
V Final Frontier. The opening scenes of a real climber (not Shatner) solo climbing. But that’s about it.
Generations. I think McDowell was one of the better, more sophisticated, more “determined” villains. Hell, to blow up a star just to achieve your goal is one motivated individual !
Insurrection. I liked the plot aspect of “kidnapping” the inhabitants instead of just out and out killing them. And also that so much of the action took place on the planet (in the eastern Sierras, no less). Lastly… the kids playing multi-hacky sack !
Nemesis. (lots of bad. Drawing a blank on anything good)
I think that all of the internet critics of TMP miss out on just how incredibly important it was to the Trekkies of 1979 to be seeing Kirk and Spock and the rest again after 12 years of nothing but after-school re-runs. There were no sequels, no internet forums, not even VHS tapes to rent. It was nowhere near as “normal” to be a sci-fi geek then, either, as opposed to now.
ST3: Search for Spock - No way near as bad as everyone says; the sequence with the Enterprise self-destruct (yes, I admit it) brings tears to my eyes every time i see it. Call me a naïf, the first time I saw this film, I didn’t see that coming.
TMP - the Klingon battle cruisers. Also, the “V-Ger” reveal - that was pretty mind-blowing to my 9-year-old mind.
Search for Spock - I liked the scene where the Bird of prey uncloaked and was huge and menacing, then the conversation in Klingon with Christopher Lloyd where his girlfriend knew she was going to die.
Final Frontier - uh…that dancing cat alien?
Generations - I liked the Stellar Cartography scene, and I liked Malcom McDowell
Insurrection - Picard’s girlfriend was nice to look at.
Nemesis - the scene with the container of poison that turned the Romulan Senate to ashes was pretty cool.
