In one of the “rabbit season, duck season” trilogy of cartoons, there is a scene with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck each disguised as the other. The Bugs-imitating-Daffy and Daffy-imitating-Bugs voices are both perfectly done by Mel Blanc.
John Glover as twin brothers in Love! Valour! Compassion! He originated the roles on Broadway, too — I never saw it, but I’m guessing the scene they had together was added for the movie.
Tony Randall plays seven parts in the Seven Faces of Dr. Lao.
For comparison, Charmed did a similar episode, with Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan swapping out. If you watch them close in time, your respect for the Buffy crew will increase again by orders of magnitude.
I actually think Patty Duke did an exceptional job in a ridiculous show. I watched all of the episodes again a couple of years ago. I can actually tell the difference between Patty playing Cathy and Patty playing Patty playing Cathy. And she did it with an accent!
For all that she is a train wreck these days, Lohan in the Parent Trap remake was never less than completely believable as (1) the kid from the Napa valley, (2) the kid from a posh section of London, (3) the kid from the Napa valley trying to pass as the kid from the posh section of London, and (4) the kid from the posh section of London trying to pass as the kid from the Napa valley.
She had talent and ability once. Such a shame.
The 3 Stooges short Self-Made Maids, with Moe playing himself and Moella, Shemp playing himself and Shempetta, and Larry playing himself and Lorraine, is a sublime deconstruction of the dual role trope.
In other words, its greatness is in how intentionally bad it is.
The 3 stooges play every role in the film. And it’s the best doppelganger creation ever.
I have 2 dear friends that worked on that, and some of the reviews have not been positive - did you like it?
Not that they’ve appeared together, but i do enjoy Zach Galifianakis and his twin brother Seth.
In an episode of The Nanny, Fran Drescher reprised her role as Bobbi Fleckmann from Spinal Tap, then played Fran-imitating-Bobbi, with hilarious results.
Shatner and Sandra Smith both played Janice Lester and Captain Kirk in Turnabout Intruder. I never had a problem believing one was the other when I saw that episode but it was years ago.
What about Armie Hammer playing both the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network? I know a lot was editing, but you could tell the differences between the twins pretty well.
(I know my husband was surprised it was one guy; when we saw the Lone Ranger preview, he asked me who was playing the Ranger, and I told him. He asked who that was, and I said “The Winklevoss Twins”. He didn’t know it wasn’t actually a set of twins.
Well, in the case of Peter Sellers, he was already routinely playing multiple characters with the Goons.
Tricia Helfer playing the many incarnations of Six in Battlestar Galactica. Head Six was similar to Caprica Six (upon whom she was based), but quite different from Shelly Godfrey who was quite different from Gina Inviere who was different from Natalie.
In the same show, Grace Park did a great job playing Boomer and Athena. While Tricia’s many characterizations were usually aided by wigs and costume changes, Grace often had to play two different characters with nothing more than facial expressions and general demeanor.
I didn’t love it, but I did like it and I’m glad I saw it. Reading the not-so-great reviews it seems that people wanted more to happen, more of a plot, and/or more insight into the doctor’s murky thought process. Sure, maybe I would have liked those things too, but I always try to take a movie for what it is and push away what I wanted to see to judge it on its own. For what was onscreen, I liked it.
I’m sure I would have liked it whether or not Viggo Mortensen played the roles or not, even though he is why we went to see it. It was an interesting and suspenseful premise and unpredictable characters. I also liked the look of it and the locations.
Tell your friends that it surprisingly played at a multiplex here in Chicago. As I type this it’s still playing. What did they do on the film?
I think the actor that did it the longest(and probably the best) was David Canary as Adam and Stuart Chandler on All My Children. He played both roles for over twenty years.
Equipoise - a former roommate of mine was the still photographer, and his wife was an Associate Producer.
Heck, Sam Rockwell was most of the characters in Moon, and did well.
Yeah, he was awesome on that show. I don’t know why he hasn’t gotten more work than he has. I’ve barely seen him since, all I can recall is a small part on the most recent season of Dexter, which didn’t really let him show what he’s capable of.
Anyway…
The girl on the Vampire Diaries (literally playing a doppleganger) has gotten better than she used to be. There are still plenty of better actresses already mentioned in the thread, but in the most recent meeting of Elana and Catherine, she was much better at making the characters clearly play differently beyond just one having straight hair one having wavy hair.
There’s also the girl on the Lying Game, I think she does a pretty good job of playing twins. They also play the hair game, but usually you can tell which she’s supposed to be even when one’s playing at being the other.
Oh, and I have to give Shatner props for the transporter duplicate episode of TOS. Yeah, he was hammy and ate up the scenery (duh, he’s Shatner), but you really believe each Kirk was a different person.
