Best phones for senior citizens

So Ma and Pa are getting up there. On a fixed income, they are increasingly finding phone/cable/internet too expensive. They’ve tried “Magic Jack” and Vonage, but find them too confusing to set up. (I’m 1000 miles away) Cell Phones are problematic, as the buttons are too small, the features too confusing, and they are afraid they will lose it.

Ideally, I’d like to just add them onto my cell plan as an extra line, to give them one less bill … but I’m not sure what I can give them as a phone. There are some senior-friendly cell phones out there, but what they’d really like is something the size of a traditional cordless phone. I’m seeing some cell phone docking stations that come with handsets attached … anyone use one of these?

They will probably use it more to take calls, rather than make them. Keypads can be confusing, and difficult to manage. This one comes with a sturdy case. You can add accessories.

furt, I recently helped my mom get a phone, and just asked the rep at AT&T which ones they recommended. My mother’s problem is vision-related, so the problem is a little different. But the fact remains that she needs very few bells and whistles and the simpler the menus are, the better, since she essentially has to memorize everything.

They recommended the Pantech Breeze. Mom likes it because it has some audio features, like giving you the time out loud. You can also program three keys at the top for frequently used numbers, as well as assign speed-dial numbers.

Hope that helps.

You can call the Nation Center for Customers with Disabilities and see what kind of special phone they may have available.
