I know we’ve seen versions of this thread before, but it’s been awhile so I thought I’d make a new one.
I just bought my PS2 (price drop!) and am both looking for new and fancy games as well as good games from last year that I missed. So far I have played through Onimusha, Metal Gear Solid 2, The Bouncer, and Final Fantasy X. Of these, I liked them all except for Bouncer and FFX. Mercy, but FFX was horrible–terribly disappointing.
What should be next on the list? Any genre besides sports/racing is acceptable.
Medal of Honor: Frontline looks pretty cool. GTA3 pushes my moral envelope too far, and that’s pretty tough to do. Not that I’m opposed to video game violence per se, but GTA3 just seems a little too nihilistic for me to justify the brute behavior.
Heck, I enjoy a good headshot as much as the next guy (or girl; my wife likes to play PS2 with me, among other games), but we had trouble with certain parts of Syphon Filter. I dunno if we’d make it through Grand Theft Auto.
On the basis of cheap eBay pricing and decent reviews, I just bought Devil May Cry. Hope it’s good–I’ve been hungering for a Castlevania-like game for ages.
I’m playing Devil May Cry right now, and I find it a tad disappointing. Lots of running around, the fights tend to be rather long and boring (though that may differ in the “advanced” mode), and the gameplay is very linear. It looks great, though.
How is Metal Gear Solid 2? Anything they claim it is?
Grand Theft Auto 3 - I’ve been thinking about it. Maybe I should get it.
Did you just say out of Bouncer and FFX, FFX was more dissapointing? I don’t know of anyone that has felt that before. Bouncer was one of the most awaited releases for the PS2 and ended up being a short, sub-par button masher. FFX took up 65 hours of my time, and I enjoyed almost every second of it.
Well, then you should stay away from State of Emergency then. (actually, after you kill 2400 civilians in one of the chaos stages, it gets rather boring)
Was playing Grandia 2 (dreamcast port, IIRC) and liked it, but the PS2 is packed again cuz i have to move again.
Yes State of Emergency is a great game, but the novelty wears off very quickly. I still think that GTA3 has the best replay value of any PS2 game out right now.
They were both bad. However, I had really high expectations for FFX, especially since the official excuse for FFIX being so mediocre was that Square was directing all its creative energy to FFX. Lemme tell ya, I liked FFIX way better than FFX. [sigh] My wife and I cursed in frustration at the horrible, horrible final 40 hours of FFX. It started off great, but (no spoilers) the plot grinds to a halt, the characters stop growing/developing, the music starts to suck, the visual direction gets ham-handed despite the excellent graphics, and the endgame and conclusion are insulting to the intelligence.
I didn’t expect that much from The Bouncer, so I wasn’t that let down.
Oh well, at least Lulu from FFX is absurdly hot. [ducking wife’s punch]
And as for Metal Gear Solid 2: I think it’s the finest game I’ve ever played. Not the #1 most fun game (although definitely in top 5), but it was so well-designed and enjoyable that I have to tip my hat to it. Great music, great graphics, thoughtful and exciting gameplay, a great story that never drags or loses its tension (take notes, Squaresoft!), and a surprisingly complex ending. Oh yeah, and a big sword to cut up people.
Anything cool on the horizon, slated for release in the next few months? I’m hoping for a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics for PS2 sometime in the next two years.
Actually you know there remaking mgs2 becuase the metal gear fans hated the main character that wasnt solid snake ? Also the story will be tightened and the like so it will be mgs 2.5
if you want really good reviews go to www.gamespy.com
A good rpg is summoner although the ps2 seems short on true rpgs
one ofthe best rpgs isnt mad for the ps2 get dragon warior 7 if ya finish it with out the hint book ill bow to your godliness …
But im more of a japan style rpger who dosent care for sound or graphics as long as the storys good
Medal of Honor - Frontlines: Amazing. The beach landing, the whole thing…just amazing. Tricky controls, but damn good. Like watching a movie. I played on my 60" TV w/ surround - un-freakin-believable.
Grand Theft 3 - very good
As for sports…Sega’s NFL2k2 or EA Madden football, EA Hockey, Grant Turismo 3 and Sega’s NBA2k2
Sine GTA3 seems to be off the list, I’d recommend either Klonoa or Maximo for action platformers (Klonoa is actually a 2D game with 3D characters, Maximo is more of a 3D game on “rails”), and highly recommend Tony Hawk 3. I also liked the SpiderMan game, although it does have some minor control issues.
Yeah, I heard that. I don’t get it–it was certainly a surprise that Raiden was the main character, but I still enjoyed it. I signed on for Metal Gear-style “tactical espionage action,” and as long as the gameplay delivered I didn’t care who was doing the hiding and shooting. I did, however, miss Mei Ling from the first one.
I might go buy Medal of Honor today. We’ll see.
Thanks to all for the replies!
