What are some shows you’d recommend for Vegas? Keep in mind that this is for my family which includes an under-15 daughter.
Shows that we like are things like Cirque du Soleil and David Copperfield. Anything else in that vein? (e.g. Blue Man Group?)
Also, do you know of any website that lists all the shows, with some user reviews for each? The few websites I found aren’t that great, don’t have user reviews, and don’t even have all the shows.
My website is woefully out of date - I have had some computer problems and haven’t had time to go in to update since March. (Hopefully during my Christmas break I can go in to fix/update all of this.) Still, I have one section on shows that gives a few tips.
For a 15 year old, you can’t go wrong with most of the Cirque shows (other than Zumanity that is for adults) and there are some suggestion in my “Cheap Thrills” page about other things to do.
Just remember that Vegas is by no means kid friendly. Everyone under the age of 21 has to be accompanied by an adult at all times, you have to walk briskly through any gaming area and there are quite a few things/people that you might not want to have to explain to a 15 year old.
Oh, I don’t know. Unless the 15 year old is extremely sheltered, I don’t think there is anything on the streets of Vegas that will puzzle her. Shock her maybe, but not puzzle.
Sorry, didn’t mean to be so abrupt. I’ve seen a smattering of clips, but aside from promotional materials’ descriptions, what’s different from the plethora of ice dancing and other fluffery comprised of scantily clad dancers gyrating together? Is there dialogue? Nudity on par with Jubilee? Again, seeing, say, the two girls in one cupclip nothing strikes me as particularly risque or different from modern dance.
It’s expensive (all of the Cirque shows are) but we just saw Le Reve last week and I thought it was fantastic. I have no idea what it was supposed to be about (also like other Cirque shows) but it was visually spectacular.
I went to Vegas in July and checked Yelp for reviews of shows. The highest rated show on Yelp at the time was one called Absinthe at Caesar’s Palace. Absinthe was very, very different from any Vegas show I’ve seen or heard of. It takes place in a semi-outdoor small circular theater, the performers come dangerously close to the audience, and unfortunately because of some pretty crude jokes throughout the whole show, it’s probably (read: almost definitely) not appropriate for a 15 year old. But it is amazing!
To me, the Cirque shows can be a thrill. I’ve seen three of their Vegas shows (Mystere, Love, and O), and my favorite is Mystere. Least favorite was Love (just kind of boring, and I love the Beatles). It seems everyone’s opinions differ on their favorite shows though. And then some people just don’t like them at all.
The pre show involves two actors throwing dildos into the audience and using bananas to simulate oral sex on audience members.
The first act (if I’m remember correctly) is two topless women swimming in a fishbowl, simulating lesbian sex with each other.
There are various overt S&M scenes.
The final scene is a big, simulated orgy (with moans and all), that ends with big white stuff being shot up from a couple on a bed that the host makes grind on one another.
That leaves out all the overt sex jokes.
Anywho! I second that Love would be a good show for the family, though I would beware: I do think it is a lot less"Cirquey" than most of the Cirque shows (more dancing than craziness).
My pro tip is to use Tix4Tonight-- they have booths up and down the Strip. You go the morning you want to go to shows, wait in line, and they’ll have most of the shows (including Cirque/Lion King/ big shows) at a pretty substantial discount. I’ve never paid more than $65 to see a Cirque show and I’ve always been in the first few rows.
Tix4Tonight can also help you sort through the countless other, silly shows. I suggest you guys check out an impersonator show, just because they can be cheap and fun. A friend and I saw American Superstars at the Stratosphere a while back and got the tickets for $20 from Tix4Tonight. When we got there, they asked if we wanted to pay an extra $10 to sit in a VIP booth, which was super comfy and fun.
