Based off of these two threads, here and here, I ask this:
What is the best (or at least most tolerable) song(s) by your least favorite artist? I thought of this while hanging out with my girlfriend this weekend, who by my estimation has the worst taste in music of all time. Some examples would be the song “Late in The Evening” by Paul Simon, whom I loathe, but this song isn’t as grating as some of the others. More examples would be:
“It’s The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M.
And
“Have a Cigar” by Pink Floyd
I really dislike both of the artists for reasons we won’t get into here, but if I had to pick a “best” song by either, those would be mine.
Barry Manilow: Copacabana
Steve Miller Band (not really fair, since their early work was great): Your Saving Grace
Abba: Take a Chance on Me
It’s heresy, I know, but I change the station whenever Bob Dylan comes on the radio – unless it’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.”
Bob’s one of the greatest songwriters of our, and many other, times – but his songs usually sound better when they’re sung by someone else. “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” is the exception.
I really don’t think I can pick a least favorite Creed song. They’re just all equally bad to me by virtue of being Creed songs.
My least favorite Guns ‘n’ Roses song is Mr. Brownstone. It actually is better than Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and worst of all, Sweet Child o’ Mine - and it has the added virtue of being less overplayed.
I was having a lot of trouble thinking of someone who would qualify as my “least Favorite Band,” at least one that had a song I could name and didn’t despise. Another thread suggested the solution: The Dazz Band’s “Let It Whip.” Everything else they’ve done has been almost prefectly banal.
w/r/t the Floyd, it might be their choice of singers, since the lead on Have a Cigar was by Roy Harper. (Although that’s my favorite band.)
My “least favorite artist”? Hmm, that’s a tough one. I guess it would have to be one of the Hip-Hop mogul’s: Dr Dre, Jay-Z, Diddy… Diddy, yes! God, I hate him. Now, let’s see. Which song, which song? Come With Me (featuring Jimmy Page)! Yes, that’s it. That’s my pick.
Diddy - Come With Me
My two least favorite bands are Chicago and Led Zeppelin. They’re DQ’d automatically.
My other least favorite band would be the Eagles, and hands down their best song is “Outlaw Man” from Desperado.
Much as I cannot stomach Jagger, his duet with David Bowie of “Dancing in the Street” was cool
I think this thread begs us to bring out the hate!
I hate Nine Inch Nails, but I think their cover of Joy Division’s Dead Souls is pretty good.
Also don’t dig Pink Floyd, but I really enjoy Lucifer Sam
I’d be pleased as punch to find out that Morrissey had stepped into the path of an oncoming bus, but I’ll admit to occasionally not instantly pounding the “change station” button when Girlfriend In A Coma comes on the radio.
When forced to listen to anything by Phil Collins, I have to fight the urge to bash my head against random solid objects.
However, sometimes…in the middle of the night…when I’m all alone…I’ll find myself humming Misunderstanding.
And just to disprove the “Every band has at least one decent song” notion, my other least favorite musical (and I use the term loosely) entity is Journey and they don’t have a single redeeming quality, musical or otherwise.
Alanis Morrisette’s “Jagged Little Pill” left me wishing someone would take a jagged little mirror to her throat. And then she came out with “Uninvited” which I find to be hauntingly beautiful.
He’s not nearly my least favorite artist, but I really dislike Elton John’s music, except for two songs: “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and “Rocket Man”.
