Best songs of 2019/the 2010s

Perhaps you’re already getting nostalgic for 2019, or the entire 2010s. “What did people with discriminating tastes listen to back in that bygone era?” you might be wondering. Well, I’m here to help!

This is obviously completely subjective, but I do have impeccable taste, even if I do say so myself.

FYI, these playlists were created on Apple Music and I used an app to transfer them to Spotify, since so many people use that service. But some songs were lost in the process. I’ll try to manually fix the Spotify versions as soon as I can, and that should update globally; but for now just keep that in mind.

The 2019 playlist is arranged by artist, in alphabetical order (as Apple Music judges it, meaning by a solo artist’s first name, which I’m not super jazzed about but eh). It just so happens that the first track (Angel Olsen’s “New Love Cassette”) is actually my favorite song of the year.

The 2010s playlists are sorted chronologically. My favorite song of the decade, FWIW, is the Decemberists’ 2015 track “Lake Song”.

(The description of how the playlists are ordered applies to the original Apple Music versions. In Spotify, not so much.)

I presume we’re all invited to post lists of our own here? I don’t use Spotify and I don’t feel like tackling the entire decade, so I’ll just do a list for 2019. In no particular order:

White Reaper - Might Be Right
Purple Mountains - All My Happiness is Gone
Of Monsters and Men - Alligator
Gygax - Hide Mind
Jade Bird - My Motto
Tuxedo - The Tuxedo Way
Riot City - Burn the Night
Jesse Taylor - Morning Light
War Cloud - State of Shock
Caroline Polachek - So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings
Church of the Cosmic Skull - Sorcery & Sabotage
Martha - Love Keeps Kicking

Interesting–I don’t know any of those songs and only one of the artists (Of Monsters and Men).

FWIW, you don’t have to use Spotify or Apple Music to see what songs are on my lists. Clicking them will take you to a list you can look at, although you have to at least have a Spotify Free account to actually listen.

Spotify cuts off the playlists at thirty, but I can see the full ones on Apple Music. Nice Lumineers and Dawes picks.

Thanks!
