Best "Spin Off" Band

I’m sure this has been done before but I wasn’t sure how to look up such a thing so I thought we’d start a fresh thread.

Looking for the best"Spin Off" bands - meaning, a new band formed w/ a member (or members) of another band.

Obviously, most major bands had members that were in bands before that nobody’s ever heard of. For the purposes of this thread, let’s only discuss bands where the original band was fairly well known.

Let’s not discuss solo artists. Only bands.

I’ll start with Foo Fighters, which is a “spin off” of Nirvana (in case there is someone that doesn’t know, David Grohl, the lead singer of FF, was the drummer in Nirvana).

And Dave Grohl went on to form Them Crooked Vultures, which could be considered a double spinoff of Queens of the Stone Age, since Josh Homme is a member, besides Grohl.

Either Cream or Led Zeppelin, both of which spun off from the same band… sort of.

I’d go with The Who and The Rolling Stones, both of whom had members that were in The Faces.

And don’t forget that Jon Paul Jones (Led Zepplin) is also in TCV!

Wilco and Son Volt were spun off by former band members of Uncle Tupelo.

I started to edit a parenthetical to that effect but got sidetracked looking for Traveling Wilburys information and ran out the edit time.

Anyway, the Traveling Wilburys consists of George Harrison (from the freakin’ BEATLES! You don’t get much more supergroup than that), Jeff Lynne from ELO, Tom Petty (technically “from the Heartbreakers”), and two solo artists, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan (but WHAT solo artists!).

Wings, Plastic Ono Band, and the All-Starr Band might count. Or they might not if you consider them just glorified solo projects…TRM

ELO is a spin-off from The Move. I’m not sure I’d call the Wilburys a spin-off; they are more of a “super group.”

Mark-Almond – from John Mayall

The Mamas and the Papas from the Mugwumps

The Lovin’ Spoonful from the Mugwumps

Little Feat – Spun off from the Mothers of Invention.

Illusion – Spun off from Renaissance (actually what you know as Renaissance was spun off of Renaissance)

Flash – spun off from Yes

Flash and the Pan – from The Easybeats

Rhinoceros — from various groups.

Hot Tuna – from the Jefferson Airplane

Time for Three – Spun off from the Philadelphia Orchestra.

I agree… Supergroups probably shouldn’t count as they are usually only formed for one-off projects or sporadic projects.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - from The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies.

While possibly technically a supergroup, CSNY’s longevity as a group on their own far surpasses that of the “donating” groups.

Minor Threat - Embrace, Fugazi, The Meatmen, Dag Nasty, Government Issue, among others.

Rossington-Collins Band, rising from the ashes of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Not sure if this should count: “Page and Plant” touring under that name after the official breakup of Led Zeppelin.

Thought of another one:

**Soundgarden **and **Pearl Jam ** were both formed by ex-members of seminal Seattle band Mother Love Bone.

Maritime - from the Promise Ring and the Dismemberment Plan. I count them as a spin off band because TPR was so much bigger than dismemberment.

Foo Fighters recorded/toured with members of Sunny Day Real Estate
A member of SDRE recorded/toured with Dashboard Confessional.
A member of Dashboard Confessional, Scott Schoenbeck, was a member of the Promise Ring.
And two members of the Promise Ring are in Maritime.
