Best thread or argument that fizzled on you

IMHO, it hasn’t been “dead”. Rather, people kept in it the back of their minds. They considered what they thought were good arguments, and actually gave people a chance to respond, rather then immediately go and post here. Such immediate complaining here would make it look like they were cry-babies, where as waiting two weeks, and then posting here actually makes sense. However, it increases the time between posts on this thread, making it appear dead.

BwanaBob: Could you link to that old thread? Perhaps someone may have learned something new since then. At second thought, here you go.

Was it Angels & Insects?

Thanks for trying. I really didn’t want to hijack this thread but I’ll just add a few details and if you’re so inclined to help me that would be excellent.

The movie was set in “modern times”. A guy leaves home to join armed forces and doesn’t know his mother was pregnant. He shuns his family for 20 years and comes back for his father’s funeral. He meets his unknown sister. They fall for each other and ultimately move in together. Neighbors get wind of this and cause all sorts of hassles (graffiti on door etc.) They get arrested for incest and are brought to trial. Ultimately they are acquitted due the fact that they were not raised together as siblings and they agree not to have children. It was supposed to be based on a true case (I guess if I could find the true case, the movie would follow). I believed it aired on A&E eons ago.

Heck, I can’t even find it myself anymore, but I started a thread about “what’s your favorite analogy?”

Given the well-read intellectual bent of many Dopers, I was hoping to get folks chiming in with cools ways they explain, oh, the Theory of Relativity or some other tough concept to other people.

It died. I guess I just assume it was “too cute” or pretentious. Which I suppose it was…
