I have seen and commented on the worst town in America thread so then what is the best town?
Saline, Michigan
Impact, Texas is racially diverse, housing and land are affordable, and there is ample room to get involved in community activities. Locals describe it as a quiet community with lots of outdoor recreational opportunities. Only a few violent crimes were reported in the past year.
Asheville, North Carolina gets my vote.
out of pure shock, having grown up there in the late 60’s and early 70’s, I feel I must ask why you think this
What do you consider it’s attributes? It’s not very far from Jackson, and judging by my in-laws, the people are at least as revolting.
I saw a cardinal there once, but that isn’t really enough to make up for the economy, or people.
Lexington, Kentucky won several “best town” awards from major magazines back when I lived there in the 90’s. Subsequently large numbers of people started moving in, and shortly thereafter it was no longer the best town. It originally won those awards for generally low crime, decent traffic, good education (compared to the rest of Kentucky), and pleasant countryside surrounding it in all direction.
That’s because there’s only 39 people. It’d be worse if there were more people.
According to the FBI, my hometown of Brick, NJ is the Safest City In America.
Of course, “safest” does not necessarily equal “best”. There’s a reason I moved away. I used to think it was the best place…then too many people started agreeing with me. Now it takes a half-hour to get across town.
Mystic, CT of course!
I’m gonna nominate my hometown, Carson City, Nevada.
It has a lot of bad points - for instance, it’s just now getting a freeway, the housing market is in the shitter (rental rates are pretty good, though - I only pay $495 a month for my place), and a lot of really cool local stores are closing because of big box stores - but I have yet to go to a place that inspires the kind of loyalty that Carson does.
Every person I know, personally, that has moved away from here has moved back within five years. They come back saying “…I missed it.” I don’t know if it’s the history, the mountains, the hometown feeling, or what - but we love it here. I have a friend who has moved all around the country and always winds up back in Carson. She says “This is home.”
I know that I, personally, would never want to live anywhere else - I’ve seen a lot of this country, and I still stand by that declaration. She’s right - this IS home.

Brick is a nice town. Money Magazine named Morrestown NJ as “Top Town” in US.
It is a nice town (dry) with excellent schools. Very expensive though and NJ taxes will kill you.
Saline is about 30 miles away from Jackson according to the map–and a million miles away in every other respect.
Saline has the benefit of being a genuine small town, yet it has a thriving downtown. It is close enough to Ann Arbor (a true University town in the best sense of the word) to enjoy all its cultural benefits and benefit from its general economic resiliency. Because it has become a bedroom community for Ann Arbor (and to a lesser extent, Detroit), it’s got some affluence, and a good school system.
Unfortunately, it’s about to get a Wal-mart.
I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s the best town in America, but it’s pretty nice. We live closer to Ann Arbor, but I increasingly choose to go to Saline for dining and shopping because of the overall environment and nice level of service.
I’m with tashabot, whom I’ve never met even though we both live in Carson.
The mountains are beautiful.
There’s a heap and a gob of public land all around town so backpacking, camping, fishing, and such like things are taken care of.
Something like 15 ski areas within an hour, though this year they have no snow.
Lake Tahoe is 30 minutes away.
Reno/Sparks (pop ca 300,000) is 30 minutes. So you get yer big city shopping and airport needs attended to.
We just got a new hospital. If my recent trip to the ER (35 stitches, $481 was the total bill) is any indication it is a good one.
There’s a community college in Carson and UNReno (currently 11th in the nation in basketball).
It’s the state capitol so there’s generally that kind of stuff going on.
We got a couple of big casinos and a bunch of smaller ones. We went to the steak house at the newest one a while back and we had what was probably the best steak we’d ever had.
The casinos in Reno bring in a butt-load of good entertainment.
Carson has a couple of community theaters. The plays they put on are great!!! We’ve never gone home disapointed.
A new multi-plex movie house is being built.
With no kids in school (the Little Hook is 37) we don’t know much about the schools. But there doesn’t seem to be much negative stuff in the news about them. Most of the buildings, it seems to me, are reasonably new and well kept up.
We got whores right out of town. There’s 4 brothels just east of town. Including the more or less famous Moonlight Bunny Ranch. HBO, I think, did a thing on it a while back.
Good number of parks. And we have working ranches right in town. Almost every day I see a couple of coyotes roaming around the pasture looking for mice. Last week there was a bobcat out hunting.
The summers do get pretty hot, but it almost never rains. From early May until November we might not get 1 1/2" of rain.
The winters are mild, though this January we did have an unusually cold snap. But yesterday it was in the 60’s so I had my bike out.
Yeah, it’s a cool place.
