Best video game since Deus Ex?

need sugestions. Deus Ex is one of the best games I’ve ever played, gameplay is good, but the story is fantastic (especially like the tomfoolery of FEMA made several years before Katrina). Any games that can compare?

Call of Duty 2?

Deus Ex isn’t an easy game to beat, but here are some that you MIGHT be interested in depending on what you want in a game:

Futuristic conspiracy-type games:
Deux Ex: Invisible War (this should be an obvious choice since it’s the official sequel, but it’s generally considered inferior to the first)
Half-Life 2 (good game but not an RPG)

First-person story-centered RPGs:
System Shock 2 (This is excellent game that you HAVE to try. It’s a bit old – which also means it should be cheaper – so just look for it on eBay or other old-game stores)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Don’t worry about the previous 2 in the series; all they have in common is the name. The stories aren’t actually related to each other.)

First or third-person action/stealth games:
The Thief series
The Splinter Cell series
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (Based on the movies Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick, but a good game by itself)

I am a die-hard believer that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the best video game since Final Fantasy VII (which I think is the best video game ever made and which I do not think will ever be dethroned. My intense adoration for FFVII and my hatred of all the other FF’s since [excluding 8] with their pointy-eared-creature sword-and-sorcery b.s. and lack of 7’s unique juxtaposition of cyberpunk/military style and cartoon cuteness could fill another thread, probably two or three.)

Ahem.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the best game in recent years, by far. The story is unbelievable. The visuals are absolutely peerless (I’m referring to the in-game graphics, which are so good that they fill in where lesser games would have cinematic cutscenes.) The sheer amount of interesting dialog and the twists and turns of the story are enough to make it amazing, but add in the very engrossing gameplay (you need to actually hide in the grass and look around because you can’t rely on a radar like the other Metal Gear games) and the suspense created by this, plus the amount of real-life authentic weapons and gear (which will impress the hell out of any actual military buff) plus the hilarious over-the-top character of the young Revolver Ocelot, and the unbelievably sexy and yet intimidating Boss (the only female badass, movie or VG, who actually looks like a real military badass and not an S&M fuck doll)…shit, I could go on forever.

Snake Eater is an unbelieveable, amazing game. I swear you will NOT be disappointed by this game. It’s a stunning masterpiece. It’s like playing the best Cold War espionage movie ever.

I’m a huge fan of Resident Evil 4. It’s easily one of the best game I’ve ever played and possibly the best. The story is good as is the dialogue. Good graphics, though better on Gamecube than ps2. The controls are the best of any resident evil game and flow nicely with the game. The replay value is huge. I’ve gone through it five or six times, and you simply must have the infinite rocket launcher.

Other than that, I’d try…

1)Shadow of the Colossus. The replay value is low, but it is one hell of a ride and the visuals are amazing.

2)Silent Hill 4. Another best of the series game. The controls finally work well and they’ve found a good balance between action and space. Very creepy.

3)Fatal Frame 2 or 3. Top notch gaming in all aspects. Controls are flawless. Story is perfect and creepy. The atmosphere and enemies should get you jumping out of your seat.

4)Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari. These games are this generations tetris. Maddeningly addictive and one of the most purely fun games I have played.

Agreed on RE4. I’m going through it the second time for my girlfriend’s sake. She loves to watch that game. It scares her like a good horror movie.

As far as Fatal Frame goes. I have FF2, but have never played 1. Is there anything I need to know about the story before delving into FF2?

I dunno, but shouldn’t they name a game so that it doesn’t sound like “Day o’ Sex”? :::d+r:::

I just wanted to pipe up in agreement that Deus Ex is probably one of the best games ever played. The response it gets is more like something you’d get from a movie or from a book. It’s truely affecting.

Probably the wierdest moment of my life (which is pretty wierd) was walking around Battery Park years after playing Deus Ex. I knew every little turn. I could point out the places where i had launched grenades and found secret entrences and stuff. It was like having false memeories. Very wierd.

I’ve been playing Vampire: Bloodlines recently. It’s a first person RPG using the HL2 engine, set in White Wolf’s World of Darkness RPG setting. I’m not big on the whole gothy vampire thing, but it’s pretty cool, and reminds me of Deus Ex in a lot of ways. Buggy as hell, unfortunetly. There are a bunch of fan-made patches out there, after the official patch fell short of fixing everything that was broken in the original release.

The MAJOR problem with MGS3, IMHO, is the terribly shitty camera. If you are designing a 3rd person game but your camera forces players to switch to a clumsy 1st person view just to see 25ft infront of them that should tell you there is a problem. I REALLY wanted to like that game, and I did, but the camera frustrated me to the point that I gave up 3/4 of the way thru.

One sad thing to note about Vampire: it’s not nearly as good the second time. While you may have missed a few things the first time around, probably not much. Also, you wind up with a combat monster character any way you go.

I loved Deus Ex: I like first-person games where shooting isn’t the main fun of them. A similar game (not first-person, but it often feels like one) is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Beautiful environments, a middling storyline, and lovely puzzles. It’s the most pure fun I’ve had with a computer game in many years.

Not at all. There is a little of related story in Fatal Frame 3, but nothing at all in 2. Really, the camera is the only common factor. If your girlfriend loves to watch RE4, she’ll love Fatal Frame 2 as well. It’s also like a good horror movie, and the ending is simply brilliant. It’s got a few scare you out of your skin moments.

Kind of sad, really, that nobody jumped in to say, “Oh, Deus Ex 2! It was the best!

Morrowind gets my vote. Desperately looking forward to Oblivion. Hope it runs on my machine…
