Ok, I just finished Season Six. Please continue no further if you wish to avoid spoilers.
So anyway, I was wondering if there were better ways for Buffy to earn money than working at DMP. I was thinking she could wear a t-shirt that says “Tipping for saving your life is greatly appreciated. Suggested tip: $50”.
Either that, or set up a Ghostbusters type service, with a toll free number, an emergency vehicle, etc.
I guess she cannot join the Initiative, even though they would pay Riley Finn.
A really cool job might be stuntman, but that would be too much of a ripoff of The Fall Guy.
There’s a real problem with charging people to save their lives after-the-fact.
Buffy: Okay, the vamp’s dead. How about some cash?
Victim: I didn’t ask you to step in.
Buffy: But you’d be dead otherwise.
Victim: Maybe, maybe not. You volunteered.
Buffy: Crap.
And there’s just no time to negotiate ahead of time in one of these situations. The victim will either promise anything (and probably not have the cash), or claim that the contract isn’t valid because he/she agreed to it under threat of death (IANAL, but I think this would fall into the “duress” catagory.)
No, with her prior experience, selling burgers is about the best she can do. I mean, she can’t even use her previous experience as a waitress, because she turned over the name, job, and apartment to what’s-her-name.
Yeah, Buffy was carrying girders with her bare hands and it made the other workers resent her for making them look bad. She got fired when demons attacked and the other workers refused to corroborate her explanation about the resulting damage.
Ok, lots of good suggestions. I guess Buffy has to be on the side of “good”, so she can’t be working for the Mob. The Slayer shouldn’t get pregnant or get an STD, so there the hooker gig. Being a stuntman or a wrestler would require her to move away from Sunnydale, and the Slayer has to be near the Hellmouth to slay. Apparently being salaried to the Initiative or the Watchers would infringe on her ability to act as an independent agent. I like the self-defense class idea! They even got a dojo setup in the back of the Magic Box.
The only problem I could see with the self-defense class is that Buffy’s schedule is erratic. She’d have a lot of pissed-off customers to deal with if she kept having to cancel to save the world.
She’d be able to slay freshly-minted vampires without leaving the workplace. You’d figure that a town like Sunnydale would not only have a high demand for grave diggers, but also a high turn-over rate as well (a non-superpowered grave digger would last about a week); that means good pay for a low-skill job.
Going back to the hooker idea, I suppose she could have rented out the Buffybot to turn tricks. Not sure how Buffy herself would feel about it, though.
I’ve been saying this for years now. The Watchers council should have been paying her mortgage and any other expenses she had.
The only reasons I can think that they don’t is that no other slayer lived long enough to need to pay off a mortgage and/or they lived off their watcher who was paid by the council. Heck… Even Giles was reinstated with back pay to the time he was fired!
