Hello All,
Gunner the Great Dane™ is starting to shed very badly. Our other dogs are also shedding, the difference being that they are “long haired” dogs and brush out very nicely with a groomers comb. Gunner has very short hair and the hair seems impervious to the comb, not being long enough to catch in the teeth.
At this point I have been using a lint roller (the one with tape on it) to grab the loose hair. It does work well, but gets filled up very rapidly and doesn’t do much except get the hair that has already fallen out. So, the question is: What is the best way to brush a very short haired dog to remove the coat that is shedding? I have seen many products, mostly gloves with plastic “tits” on it that are supposed to work, but I don’t see how those could work very well, since the “tits” are large and far apart. I am sure there is a product that will work, but I would rather have a recommendation from someone that has successfully used something than purchase 5 different items before I find one that works. THANKS!
P.S. Some have suggested the Kong Zoom Brush … anyone here used one?
Thanks for the recommendation. From the looks of it, it seems to have the Wife Approval, which is important. I was a bit shocked to see the price, almost $80 for the Giant Breed size, but if it works it should be worth it. Our house has wood floors and you can always see a fine coat of Great Dane hair covering everything. Even after I Swiffer, two minutes later .. hair everywhere!
That’s what I came in to recommend. I have a really whippy one that you can straighten out and use to squeegee water off large areas after a bath. IIRC I got it in the horse supply section at the farm store. They worked great on the horses we had when I was a kid, and they work great on my medium-haired mutt, so I think they should work great on a Dane.
My parents have a Furminator, and it is indeed awesome, but it takes forever to use even on the cat because the head is so small. The shedding blade covers a lot more real estate in a pass, which is a consideration when you have something as big as a Dane to brush.
I have tried many different things including the pricey Furminator on my slightly longer haired Labs. I am now using a pin cushion brush at times of peak shedding. I think it is faster than Furminator and more comfortable for the dog than a wire slicker brush. Some people could never convince themselves to use a $3 brush from Walmart when an $80 tool is available. I will say the Furminator seemed to work well on our son’s Fox Hound.
Went to PETCO and purchased a Large Dog/Short Haired Furminator tonight. It was $52 and seems to work very well. It got a bunch of hair off Gunner the Great Dane™. Thanks for the recommendation, quite honestly I would have never considered paying that kind of price for a fur “brush”. However, since you gave it such a high recommendation I thought it would be worth a try. Hopefully, the wood floors will be less hairy now.
Very good! I agree with the sentiment that it seems like a lot of $$ for a dog brush, but for every ball of fur you pull off him (outside) is less that will be in your house.
Had english pointers and a dalmatian. I had the best results using a rubber horse grooming tool called a curry comb… looks like this. My dogs actually loved getting brushed with that thing, and my patio would look like it snowed dog hair afterward.
BTW, to all of you that recommended a shedding blade, we tried one at Petco, but it didn’t seem to do much. Gunner’s hair is so short and thin that the teeth on the blade seemed to just pass right over it.
