Best way to find a job on the other side of the country?

I’ve finally convinced my wife to move back home. The birth of our son helped this greatly. What’s the best way to look for a job in the NY/PA area from Texas? Also, can anyone give me a feel of what kind of perks I could expect from a larger company? Should I expect (or could I get) things like moving expenses, house selling expenses, etc?

Any input would be great. I was fresh out of college when I moved to Texas and lived on my parents dime until I found a job, so I don’t know how to do this when I will be supporting a family.

From Texas to NY…wow.
I have moved a lot (as you can see from my location) and my rule of thumb is to have at least two months money (rent, food, utilities and fun cash).
If you are lucky enough to get a job BEFORE you move, all the better and you won’t need as much extra cash.
There are also cost-of-living calculaters (try Google to find one) that will let you know how much you need to earn to have the same standard of living. (ie. If you earn $100,000 in LA, you need $125,000 to live in Berlin, but only $75,000 in Las Vegas).

As far as company perks, well - if you are a hard to come by commodity, (Pulitzer prize winning scientist or honest lawyer) they will fly you and the family first class and pay the whole thing! However, if you are a mid-level executive, you might be expected to cover much, if not all, the costs of moving. (If your last name is Enron, you might have to pay them to get the job.)

Seriously, every large company has a policy regarding new hires, and it really does make a difference what level/position you are entering. CEO’s and CFO’s have a better relocation package than, say, a sales manager. But check out that cost of living calculater! When you see the price of homes, the price of a gallon of milk and the price of car insurance back East, you might be more than a little surprised! Make sure your future salary can cover the difference.

Good luck and have fun…I never made a move I regretted, and worst-case-scenario: you can always move back if you don’t like it.

Well, one way is to use the internet.
Here are some job search sites: (in no particular order.)

Disclaimer: I do not claim or assert that the aforementioned websites are current, up-to-date, honest, above-board, or even useful. Also, many of them ask you to ‘sign up’ before you can use them. I don’t know what they do with the information.

As always, caveat emptor

Good luck.

Headhunters aka corporate recruiters(ment) have placed 2 people I know. Google “Headhunters” for some Companies. BTW don’t be afraid of working with a small firm if you can get good references, they worked with a guy & 1 associate & his daughter that was the whole “firm” and the personal service was awesome … they broke thier backs for my freinds.

Bumbazine’s links are awesome. Monster.com placed my cousin who had 3 offers w/i a week (Computer person at the height of IT mania in the late '90’s tho)
