What is the easiest and/or cheapest way to make a long distance move?

Currently I am living in Michigan, and may be moving to Texas in a few months. I think I have a fairly good shot at a job I am testing for. If I do get the job, I’ll probably only have a few weeks notice before I need to be there, so I figure it is best to start fleshing out my options now… Google maps tells me it is approximately a 17-hour drive. I would really really REALLY like to not have to drive that far if at all possible, especially driving a U-Haul (I am flying to the interviews, fwiw).

So if I do get the job, what are my options for getting my stuff down there? I’d say I have maybe two pieces of furniture worth taking, and the rest can be put into boxes. I also wouldn’t be bringing my aging car with, so transporting a vehicle isn’t a concern. What is my cheapest method? What is my easiest method? What is the best balance of the two?

If it’s a job worth moving from MI to TX, they’ll probably pay the cost of moving for you. It’s fairly standard practice, see if you can find it on the company’s benefits page online. If they do, you can just hire a moving company that would even box up everything and haul it for you.

And if they don’t reimburse you, you can get a mighty deduction off your taxes for what you paid in moving expenses. Either way, dropping the cash for a hassle-free move isn’t a bad idea.
