Best website for sharing GPS trail maps ?

There are a ton of trails in my area (East SF Bay Area), but on the whole they are not that well documented (the various park websites will have some info, but its usually pretty variable quality, e.g. this one for Redwood Regional Park).

I got a shiny new GPS for my birthday, but the trail maps it comes with only seem to cover big parks such as yosemite. What are dopers recommendations for websites that allow you to get (and post) free trail maps in GPX format ?

Start here.

Then take a look at these folks –> http://www.geocaching.com/ You might not be into geocaching (yet!) but geocachers are pretty good about documenting and mapping.

WAG - You will not find many “official” maps that are well documented for GPS use. The reason should be pretty obvious - time, money and interest. While there may be substantial user interest, this does not carry over to the agencies that manage the land and the trails. GPS recreational interest in land management agencies is still hit and miss. It is also bound by legislation (For example, geocaching on federal national park lands is a flat no, but hit and miss on national forest lands.)

Ultimately you may have to put in as much as you want to get out. In other words, find some fellow hikers with GPS and start documenting trails yourself.

Don’t forget the USGS maps. They are pretty good.
