ok, I LOVE cartoons on so many levels that it’s hard to choose. The ONE that I adore above all others (and have for the past coupla years, at that) is Cartoon Planet. I love Brak, baby! I have to go w/ lines like “I like pork!” I just wish I could figger out when/if the damn show is on the Cartoon Network.
“I’ll tell you a secret, baby - maybe you can’t do better - gotta settle for second best” - the Judybats
worst cartoon–Scooby Doo. It’s not that it’s so bad in and of itself (although it’s pretty much one episode replayed endlessly). It’s not even that anything with Casey Kasem is inherently evil (although that’s true, too). It’s not even that fuckin’ Scrappy Doo.
It’s that people won’t let it die! Geez, by age 13 or so didn’t you hate the stupid thing? So why think that it’s cool now? Scooby on your tie? Ick!
Yeah, Bucky, I agree with you totally about Scooby Doo. It’s like people got sick of it so quickly the first time, that they have to do it over and over again, just to make each other get even more sick of it. It’s sort of intellectual masochism for Gen-Xers.
Best cartoon: Anything that makes you laugh and brighten up your day (For me: any classic WB)
Worst cartoon: Anything that is nothing more than a 30 minute commercial for a toy/fad or trading card. (From Pokemon to He-Man: Masters of the Universe to the horrendous “Super Mario” series from a few years ago. Jeezuz, there has been some crap on the air in my 40 years!)
With God as my witness, I thought turkey’s could fly.
Best:
“South Park”. It deals with serious social issues in a very funny way. And to the people who don’t “get” it: The animation is SUPPOSED to be like that!
I really liked “The Brothers Grunt”. Unfortunately a lot of its references were too obscure for the general MTV crowd.
And lest we forget: “Ninja Scroll”. This anime has an intelligent script, good acting, good drawing, and a good story. Very well done.
Worst:
“Smurfs”. Hands down. Or any of those other cutsie-wootsie pieces of crap that started showing up in the last couple of decades. Christ! Don’t these studio execs remember what it’s like being a kid? Or did they just have a bizarre childhood? Smurfs indeed! (Although a Smurf-skin jacket might be nice…)
My choices, for “Best”:
Pink Panther
MGM, vintage 1940s, except for the dreadful Barney Bear. I especially liked Screwball Squirrel.
The pre-King Features Popeye cartoons (see Return of the Straight Dope.)
Betty Boop
Emergency+4, an animated paramedic series in the early 70s
1.Classic Looney Toons
2.Animaniacs
My favorite Animaniac? Aunt Slappy! She is so me!
The best single cartoon? When Animaniacs Wacko, Yacko and Dot (the cute one) were “helping” Leonardo Di Vinci prepare for the arrival of His Majesty. Trivia questions: Who is His Majesty? And what where they helping Di Vinci do?
(Tiny Toons are a close 3rd)
The worst? Sailor Moon, Johnny Bravo, etc on Cartoon Network. Can you say “Gag me with a spoon”? Blech.
A cartoon is supposed to be funny and witty. Most current ones are neither (with the exception of the Rugrats, The Simpsons and King of the Hill).
“My, my. Such a lot of guns around here and so few brains.”
~Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon”
When my daughter was a little girl we’d be watching Bugs Bunny, etc. and mixed in were occasional old OLD cartoons, made back in the 30’s. I put in a blank tape in the VCR and now have over an hour of perfectly quaint, beautifully colored, vintage cartoons made when my own mom was young. They don’t make 'em like that any more!!! Also loved Astroboy way back -= Animaniacs - Batman Beyond - King of the Hill is the absolute best, tho I don’t think it should be called a cartoon.
Best any classic warner bros. the simpsons
and yes king the hill is hilarious(maybe its a texas thing)futurama is great and so is family guy(look its the wb network!)space ghost coast to coast is wonderful.
worst scooby freakin’doo
Of the cartoon network shows, I like Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab and Space Ghost, and really hate Ed, Edd and Eddy and Cow and Chicken.
I used to like Johnny Bravo in its first couple seasons or so. Then they suddenly introduced new annoying characters (Carl) and changed the animation style, and now it really sucks. Oh well. Never seen such a change in a show between seasons. What happened!?
I loved watching The Tick. Do they still even show that??
Now I know this isn’t really a cartoon but does anyone remember Schoolhouse Rock. The best part of watching cartoons when I was little was being able to see the Schoolhouse Rock cartoons between schools. My all-time favorite has to be on Interjections.
Interjections! Show excitement or Emotion.
It’s generally set apart from a sentence by an exclamation point. Or by comma when the feeling’s not as strong.*
BTW, someone mentioned *Xmen. I loved the cartoon until I started reading the comic books. You’re right. The cartoons don’t follow the comic books at all. I lost interest in it after reading the comic books.
