Best yard for rentals?

Hi all… (waves)

Well, it looks like I’m not going to be buying a house after all, but moving into a new rental. However, it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for me to have and work on a yard, garden, and landscaping. Necessary to life itself!! (gets that crazed look…) Well, anyway. The point is, I need to create a landscaped yard. So what are some ideas about how best to do this for a rental property? What’s most likely to be the kind of thing that I can pick up and move in 2 years when I move out of state? Patio furniture? What about fountains? A hot tub? Is there such a thing as a portable deck? I don’t expect to be able to move everything I work on, but it would be good to try to emphasize that in my landscape planning. All suggestions welcome!

Hi,
I understand the needing to work in a yard. I’m living in a rental and don’t want to put money into the “yard” for my enjoyment if it means I’ll have to leave it. I’m planting in pots that I can take with me when I go. As far as a deck - I think if you make it in manageable sections (not too large, not too heavy) you can just bolt it together and then unbolt it to take it with you.
Let me know how you work this all out.

Talk to your landlord up front. Wee had a misunderstanding when we started out garden, and he was not happy but realized he had given us permission to dig up a 10x15 foot section of the yard behind the house. He doesn’t mind now, after thinking it over, but the shock of pulling in to drop off some things to us and seeing a huge patch dug up was probably a little rough.

I would say put down block brick things with some sand beneath them. Till it up, scrape off the top layer, put down the vinyl-type no-grass stuff, sand, then blocks. Leave very little space between them, but maybe a centimeter or so. Then put moveable stuff on top - grill, chairs, table, and all that jazz. Then I’d probably put anything else in wooden planters. Buy them - or a better idea, make them - and put them around the edges or whatever up on something. I have seen plans for planter-benches and such, which would be a nice touch. Don’t attach the planters or benches down though, so you can take them with you!
