I love my Canon A700. 6 Mp, 6x optical zoom. It is not as compact as some, but still plenty easy to grab and go.
Digital zoom is just a crop. It’s only valid purpose is to save memory, but with 1 and 2 GB memory cards, you can hold hundreds of full res pics, so is really obsolete.
