I assumed @Oredigger77 meant “killed” in the election, i.e., soundly beaten, not literally assassinated. Am I wrong?
Yeah I had that same thought at the start — is O’Rourke “it” for TX Dems for the foreseeable future?
Then again, losing a couple of times with a “headliner” name in the ticket while building a good mobilization and fundraising structure statewide, can be a benefit to future candidates. But, at the same time, we bear in mind Beto’s not Stacey Abrams
It was a double-entendre, intentionally or otherwise. I saw it both ways immediately.
Pretty much, yeah. A few years ago the Castro brothers were widely seen as the great hope of Texas Democrats, but Julian seems to have moved on from Texas politics and Joaquin got elected to Congress and was never heard from again.
I am pretty new to the texas politics on the state scale, but I’d agree it seems the bench is pretty shallow at the moment but maybe hope.
Of the 13 out of 36 congress people 4 of them have been in congress forever , although one is not rerunning.
4 have been about 10 years or so in texas politics, and I guess should have some name recognition, which includes Castro and Al Green, maybe castronis just keepingbhus head down and working on his resume or sees a bigger national level job out there.
The final batch of 5 which include Lizzie Fletcher and Colin Allred were all elected after 2018 and seem to be doing ok, but are probably too new to the game to have any hope right now. Hopefully they can maintain their energy and keep on rolling setting up the organizations they need to maintain elected position, and who knows maybe actually do something to advance the country in their current jobs.
Yikes - just for a nanosecond got dyslexic on certain letters in Lizzie’s last name, there.
Texas Democrats are going to be hurt by immigration. They made a mistake in thinking that open immigrtion would be an electoral benefit to them among Hispanics, but it’s the opposite. Biden currently only has a 41% approval rating with Hispanics in general, and I’ll bet it’s lower in Texas. That’s down from over 70% support for Democrats by Hispanics not long ago.
Texas was a purple state for a long time. It’s now trending redder again.
And I have to ask… Why all the love for Beto? The guy strikes me as a complete lightweight. He’s accomplished nothing in life besides getting elected to local office, His education is average, his hobbies are cycling and music. I personally know half a dozen people with more impressive qualifications.
As a politician he kind of sucks. His local election wins were all in safe districts where the challengers had no chance. He lost his Senate bid to Cruz despite massive fawning media coverage and tons of financing. His presidential campaign was a bust as well, despite lots of hype and support from the media.
So what is it about him that makes Democrats keep going back to the well, for him?
He was in the House of Representatives for six years, 2013-2019.
I don’t think there is a lot of love for Beto among Democrats. There WAS back in 2018, when he was new on the scene and seemed engaging and a breath of fresh air compared to the Democratic dinosaurs still mourning their political dominance from the 70s. Him coming within three points of knocking off Cruz after years of Democrats losing by 20 points in statewide races was genuinely impressive.
A lot of the ardor has cooled, of course, as a result of his quixotic Presidential bid and other behavior. But as I mentioned above, what are the other options? At least Beto will be able to raise sufficient money to be competitive with Abbott’s massive warchest. People love a good redemption story, maybe he can sell himself as being humbled by his presidential campaign experience. His odds are low, but you can’t win with nobody.
That’s what I call efficiency! Cool the ardor before you’re even elected. Avoid the inevitable nosedive in popularity that happens after the election.
Well, except that he already ran for president and got cooled after that.
Don’t forget people don’t like voting for or donating to or endorsing a loser. It is very hard to get elected after losing two elections and no one has been elected to a major US office after their third loss.
Right.
That’s everything you need to know…anti-gun candidate shoots self in foot.
And he’s going to force your children to become gay, transgender, or both.
And he’s gonna make your children weak masks at school.
And forcibly vaccinate you all.
But it doesn’t matter, because if he wins they’ll just steal the election anyway. Looks like they pretty much have the necessary mechanisms all in place.
Actually, Beto double downed on his statement that he would take away people’s AK,-47s and AR-15s.
A really stupid thing to say to Texas Dems. Or any Dem who has ever made the argument “Never an American history as the government taken away your guns!”
Beto has effectively made a republican Boogeyman a real thing.
Thanks for that dumbass.
SMH
Beto needs to make an ad saying Greg Abbott wants your children gunned down in the schools. He needs to get off defense.
Beto’s a candidate in search of an office. POTUS, Senator, now Governor.
Besides being one of 435 representatives for a few years and the Mayor of El Paso, he’s been a bass player and computer web designer.
I don’t expect this campaign to result in an office for himself.
Speaking of lightweights with minimal political experience. . .
