Name a movie that quotes Bible Verses, but gets it wrong–OK you can use TV shows, too:

In Ghostbusters, Ray quotes Revelation 7:12. He gets it right, except for the fact that it’s Revelation 6:12.

Not sure how extensive it is in the movie, but David Seltzer’s novel of THE OMEN ascribes Revelation 13:18 (the number of the Beast is 666) to Psalm 66:6. :rolleyes:

Homer Simpson, to overcome the spider’s curse, should simply quote a Bible verse.

Best he can do is “Thou shalt not – D’oh!” At which point he frustratedly picks up a rock and hits the spider with it.

Not exactly a quote, but, in We Are the World (USA for Africa, written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie) we are told:
Send them your heart so they’ll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
So, first, let’s put aside the awful mixing of metaphors and lack of logical flow of ideas; let’s focus on the ‘God turning stones to bread’ part.

Yeah, that never happens in the Bible. Bread came from heaven for the Isrealites in the form of manna and they got water from a rock… but no stones to bread.

Jesus was tempted by the Devil in the desert to turn stones to bread since he was hungry, but Jesus very specifically rejected that as a temptation to use divine powers for selfish reasons.
And on a similar vein, let’s put every Hollywood and Made-for-TV movie that makes Mary Magdalene a prostitute on the list (or a secret lover of Jesus). Not true at all. And if any of you dare say she is… cite?

My understanding is that Mary M. gets the hooker rap b/c her first appearance in the Gospels is immediately after the ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.’ story. And that Mary and the adulteress got conflated into one person because of that.

Well, first of all, adultery and prostitution, while they can overlap, are two different things.

Secondly, the story of the attempted stoning of the anonymous adulteress is only in John’s Gospel, and in John’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene only appears much later in John’s Passion and Resurrection narratives.

The historical conflation which led to MM being thought of a prostitute probably goes like this:

  1. Anonymous notorious sinner crashes a dinner party a pharisee holds for Jesus and cries on his feet and washes the tears away with her hair. She then anoints Jesus’ feet. (We don’t know what her ‘sin’ is. It could be sexual. It could be she was a housekeeper for the Romans which would have made her as much a sinner and outcast as the tax collectors (for the Romans) were.)

  2. Mary of Bethany (a different Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus) at a dinner in her own house anoints Jesus over the head with oil and wipes it with her hair.

  3. Jesus is known to socialize with “tax collectors and prostitutes.”

  4. These two women become conflated into one in the popular mindset as a repentant prostitute.

  5. The two Marys (Magdala and Bethany) become conflated into one Mary.

  6. And sure, let’s throw in the anonymous woman about to be stoned for adultery as the one and same Mary the prostitute.

Well, that’s Dark Ages celibate monks for ya.

Not to mention that the, “stoning of the woman caught in adultery,” passage is a very late interpolation.

In “This is the End” they ‘read’ from the Book of Revelation. I can’t find a quote of what they read online, but it definitely was made up for the movie.
