That’s a stretch. If he was offered the China ambassador job, I have a feeling he’d get interested pdq.
Indiana is really Republican. I doubt he could win a statewide seat there. Possibly a Congressional seat in a purple or blue district. Sort of like how Trump could never win a local or statewide race in New York except for possibly a Congressional seat from Staten Island. I like to think that those of us from the tri-state area are too smart to fall for his bullshit.
What comes to mind is the part in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress where the protagonist, Mannie, is sent from the moon to the earth as a representative, and is jailed for his group marriage.
IN has 7 GOP and two Dem Reps in Congress.
Considering Trump’s leap I think this is more than enough experience. Not to mention Buttigieg is light years more intelligent than Trump (but then who isn’t?).
trump is a white hetero rednecked bigoted male who was incredibly well known.
Pete is a openly gay man. Trust me, his lack of experience will be held against him.
Reportedly, Buttigieg also tops Biden’s list for Transportation Secretary.
So for those hoping for a cabinet position for Mayor Pete, there’s still hope.
What kind of experience does he have that would make him qualified to run a cabinet level department in the federal government? I’m hoping to see less of that in this administration. I don’t see an issue with an ambassadorship although for some place like China it probably should be a career diplomat.
Well, he was the mayor of a city with just over 100,000 people, an annual budget just north of $380 million and 1,000 employees. Not saying that those make him the most qualified person (for comparison, DoT has an annual budget of $142 billion), but I think he’s got enough experience in public administration to make him a fine candidate for cabinet secretary, especially if TPTB think he has the political chops and intelligence to do the job well, which is pretty important at this level too.
ETA: I mean if Biden continues to only give cabinet-level positions to people with 10+ years of federal government experience, it’s going to be hard to build up the next generation of leaders, and to see what they have to offer.
For what it’s worth: Biden was never a cabinet secretary, right? And the current president, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him, and the president before him — they were all, uh, Senator This or Governor That, or a General or a VP or whatever but not a cabinet secretary, right?
Yeah, and…?
Not quite the same but …
Bush was Director of the CIA,
Both Roosevelts were Assistant Secretaries of the Navy.
Then there was:
Taft Governor-General of the Philippines and Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt.
Hoover was Director of the United States Food Administration and Secretary of Commerce
That is not correct, see the post above.
Well, not counting Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Buchanan, Adams, Van Buren and Taft.
You said: “if Biden continues to only give cabinet-level positions to people with 10+ years of federal government experience, it’s going to be hard to build up the next generation of leaders, and to see what they have to offer.” Back in my day, we routinely saw what folks had to offer when they served as, y’know, Governors or Senators or VPs.
Yep, my bad. Withdrawn.
Back in my day, people used positions as Cabinet Secretaries to move into positions like Senator, Governor, Congressperson, VP, not just the presidency. Ya know?
Out of curiosity: who is your current Governor? Your current Congressperson? Your current Senators?
Out of curiosity: What’s your point here? And what does that have to do with Pete as an ambassador or cabinet secretary?
I was wondering if any of them had been a cabinet secretary. None of mine have; I was wondering if any of yours had.
[Edited to add: and I don’t see how a stint as a cabinet secretary would help the guy.]
