I’ve never been more unhappy to be right.
Oh, Lordy. Harris is being hit with questions from Anderson Cooper, and is trying to make excuses for Biden’s performance tonight. Cooper is asking good questions, and Harris is getting frustrated trying to do her best for her boss.
I think VP Harris is doing a good job making the argument you can’t reduce 3.5 years of accomplishments to a performance in a 90 minute debate. YMMV.
If Biden did well during the State of the Union because he had notes, and the agreed rules for this debate included no notes, who on the Dem/Biden side agreed to that?!
Trump doesn’t need notes because he makes up lies on the spots, repeats one of his superlatives (“best economy ever”), or does a two-fer and makes up a superlative (“everyone wanted rid of Roe v. Wade!” “whole world is laughing at us!”).
Why? Did they make him fumble over his words? Did they make him trip up his arguments?
This was a complete disaster for Biden. I just heard that he has a cold which makes sense. He looked sick, was coughing and hoarse and had his head down between answers. Trump lied on everything but this debate was really supposed to be about which of them was mentally and physically more competent and Biden looked bad. I wanted so much for Biden to do well but he clearly didn’t have the energy. He fumbled more than usual and missed so many opportunities to contradict Trump.
Both of them were talking too fast, trying to get all of their points in and both didn’t even use all of their allotted time. I just wanted Biden to slow down, take a deep breath and take his time. I’m watching him now at the watch party and he is back to his usual self. Where was this Biden an hour ago?
Trump had so many obvious lies that could be fact checked. I’m so depressed now. Trump is going to be re-elected. He kept lobbing up these easy lies that should have been slam dunked easily.
-I never said that there were good people on both sides in Charlottesville
Pull the tape with the quotes-BOOM!
-Nancy Pelosi took full responsibility for January 6
Show us where that was in the documentary-BOOM!
They are doing abortions even after birth
That is murder and it is illegal in every state-BOOM!
-I won many golf tournaments
Tell us one tournament you have won that was not at one of your own courses-BOOM!
-Putin would never have gone into Ukraine on my watch
You told Putin to feel free to invade NATO countries and we can pull the tape-BOOM!
Alrighty then. Can’t wait for the script writers to turn this around for our hero.
Sometimes a feeble-looking man getting his ass kicked on national television just might be exactly the disaster people think it is.
None of those people were never our last hope for maintaining our rule of law, our democracy and basic human rights.
With luck, he’ll go for it.
Frankly, I think Biden should have backed out and offered to reschedule when he realized how sick he was. Trump would have made hay with the withdrawal – but not as much as he’s going to make with this debate performance.
I’ve watched Biden a lot, and not just at the State of the Union. This poor performance was an anomaly. But most voters won’t know that.
Those are the two the voters wanted.
Biden is not dropping out- if he did, trump would win.
It is the job of his prep team to understand who they are working with and play to his strengths and minimize his weaknesses and also understand the opponent and figure ways to rattle the other side.
It seems they did none of that. Biden seemed prepped for a high school debate. Lots of facts which he had a hard time recalling and then putting them into coherent and interesting responses. Knowing that how you look can be more important (in this case) than having some factoid at hand.
Trump needed no facts. He never does. His team probably kept it simple, hammer illegal migrants at every opportunity, talk about how great you are and don’t let the other guy get you upset. Go out and be you.
Pull the other one. It’s got bells on.
You can prep your candidate with talking points and rhetorical strategies, but ultimately he’s the one who has to go out there and debate. I didn’t see anything about Biden’s performance that could have been addressed through better debate prep. He had difficulty coming up with the words he was looking for. He lost his train of thought. He gave rambling, disconnected responses. He seemed like he knew where he wanted to go with his arguments, but he got lost trying to get there. That’s on him.
This is a time when America is in grave peril.
I take that seriously.
I’ve always thought Biden deliberately cut the legs out from under her by making her the Border Czar. He basically made her the scapegoat.
The number of Trump’s lies reported by fact checkers is kind of astounding, but not surprising. But that won’t alter perceptions. Biden should have picked three of them and really dialed down. No one could challenge every point nor would that be wise.
In Canada we don’t hear a lot from Harris or prominent Democrats. A healthy government has many voices.
That’s because he works best with talking point in front of him. Anytime I’ve had to give a presentation I would learn the words I stumbled over and highlight them in yellow. I didn’t need to memorize a bunch of stuff, just a few highlights. If I was a visual presentation then I made sure the words I would forget were IN the presentation.
They were not allowed to use talking points and you really don’t want to see someone looking down at notes during a debate.
So, all those elections, those votes- didnt mean a thing?
No shyte?
The moderators did make some effort to keep Trump on topic and remind the candidates of their remaining time, but they should’ve been more assertive.
As was mentioned upthread somewhere Trump was engaging in a Gish Gallop at some parts of the debate.
I have read the best way to deal with that is as you suggest. Mention that most of what they said is wrong and then pick one or two points to get into and show your case. Done well, you get to pick the best points for you to debunk.
