Diz:
When Sheldon first announced the expedition, he said he was going to the magnetic North Pole. It’s still way up in the Arctic Circle, but they didn’t keep the terminology consistent throughout the show. I assume the idea is that any magnetic monopoles caught in the Earth’s magnetic field would be channeled toward one of the poles. I have no idea if that has a basis in fact.
I’m pretty sure the existence of magnetic monopoles would not conclusively prove String Theory (there are multiple versions anyway), but it would probably help their case.
The show does tend to sacrifice scientific accuracy for the sake of comedy on occasion. It still does a far better than you’d have any right to expect from a sit-com though.
Sheldon does seem to have a bias toward String theory, so naturally he’d interpret evidence of monopoles as confirmation of String theory, but yeah, monopoles were predicted long before String theory was invented.
I’m already tired of it, to be honest…
