So Leonard and Penny are hooking up. This was a good place to leave show for the season and it was nice to see that there is a romantic spark between Penny and Leonard when Leonard kissed her. So what happens next?
It is comedy suicide to keep the main characters in a happy relationship. So do they stay together and fight, or split up and try to stay friends, or something else?
If we reverse the roles of Penny and Leonard, what are the chances that a hot guy who can have any women he wants will fall for the socially akward nerdy plain looking next door girl?
I would assume the Leonard and Sheldon make half decent salaries working at the university, but they share an apartment, even though Leonard has said that he would live alone if he could afford it. So how does Penny afford an apartment on her own working as a waitress?
I don’t agree that it’s necessarily comedy suicide… or at least, depending on how ‘happy’ you insist on. Off the top of my head, the seasons of ‘Friends’ between the Monica/Chandler first hookup and their wedding were definitely were definitely funny, arguably the show’s silver age.
And - well, exploring the cultural divide between Penny and ‘the nerdy boys’ has always been the staple of the show’s comedy, and keeping L/P in a dating mode would seem to offer a lot of possibilities to take that to the next level. Maybe they should have a crisis and break up next February for sweeps, and leave us hanging about whether they get back together for the S2 finale or not.
PS: I loved the whole Shrodinger’s cat metaphor, in all three versions, the Penny/Leonard scene, Sheldon/Leonard, and Penny/Sheldon.
I’m actually glad they broke with that tradition. They could keep it to just the one date, but I could see it move to the two of them trying to figure out how to be a couple. Up 'til now Penny has been able to keep clear of the most geeky parts of Leonard, but now she’ll see it front and center. Plus, Leonard doesn’t seem like he has a lot of relationship experience. Her existing war with Sheldon can take a turn, now competing for Leonard’s attention. She’s beginning to figure Sheldon out, too, and he’s got no clue. She can outwit him already.
I could see it. There have been movies with that kind of plotline, but, of course, the girl is “Hollywood” nerdy plain. But in general, the genders in these comedies have to stay consistant. (I’m ignorant, do nerdy girls pine over hunky jocks?)
There is a well-known rent subsidy program in the Los Angeles basin providing apartments for hot girls. The only stipulation is that the apartment location must result in humorous situation regarding neighbors. This could be a contrast to a cranky old man, a distraction to a newly-married couple, or someone the nerd next door can pine over.
It’s implied in one of the episodes that Penny’s family is Rich with a capital R. I’d imagine financing their daughter’s dreams of acting fame is just something they did.
Wasn’t Leonard described as the “superstud” of their group? Besides, he’s gotten together with Sara Gilbert in two different shows now, he’s a hero in my book.
I’m in the camp that hooking Leonard and Penny up could be comedy suicide. I can see Leonard getting really clingy and needy. They need to take it really slow.
Hmmh, I must have missed that part about being rich. But then why is she working as a waitress? The part I do remeber about her background is that she was raised on a farm and can evidently strip and rebuild a tractor.
Maybe I’m easy to please, but I really enjoyed this show last night. I can imagine some really good storylines with Leonard & Penny dating - and I’m not paid the big bucks to come up with story ideas. Maybe Sara Gilbert’s character could get jealous, in her own nerdy way.
I watched this again last night. Sheldon got a lot of air time and he was funny. I liked when he was at Penny’s and wanted to sit down. But before he could do that he had to check foam density, sun glare and air currents of all the possible seats. Penny suggested he just sit down, and if he didn’t like the spot he could move. Leonard replies in his deadpan way “that would be crazy.”
If I had to graph the subjective quality of the episodes, it would be an inverse bell curve. Good for the first few episodes, a little weaker in the middle ones, and good again towards the end of the season.
(trying to imagine self as “hot guy” and failing) Well, were it up to my taste, Sara Gilbert looked mighty yummy in that episode. I cannot speak for my brothers who are ACTUALLY hot, but I, not bragging because it’s true, have had some surprisingly (AMAZINGLY so, to me) beautiful, but not shallow, women fall for me. I may watch (and have lived) too much “Beauty and the Geek,” but could it be that Penny is only as shallow as life, so far, has asked her to be?
And weren’t she and Sara Gilbert “twins” on “Twins?” They were both desirable on that, but my preference for brunettes showed though. Hey, when I was at That Impressionable Age (13) every girl I knew was a bleached blonde (was it 100% of my junior high class?) so brunettes are Wild and Exotic for me.
