Big Love 6/04 (spoilers)

I think because if Margie and Nickie were there with them the exposure would be total. Everyone in that room would have been able to figure out what happened. Whereas removing them allows for the exposure to be happen slowly as word leaks out and people talk.

Like I said in the thread for the last episode- Season 2 will most likely be focused more on Bills awakening as a “prophet” and the family becoming divided by trying to live secularly and at the compound.

Re Bill and Roman: Their conflict is so far from financial at this point its not even part of it. Its personal.

They should’ve called the episode “Pride Goeth Before the Fall”

I thought the last 10 minutes or so were extremely powerful, starting with the moment when Barb told Rhonda she had to go back to the compound. I just thought it was a profound illustration of the moral slippage caused by Barb’s lifestyle, and deliciously ironic that she would send a relative her daughter’s age into a situation where she would have to have sex with an old pervert on the day she intended to become Mother of the Year.

[QUOTE=It would’ve been even more powerful if Nicky and Margene were there. I wonder why the writers decided to exclude them. Any thoughts?[/QUOTE]

I think that might have been a little much, although the fact that Bill was even thinking of bringing all three wives shows how overly confident he had become. But I think showing all 3 wives leaving after an accusation of polygamy might have been tooo much and might have actually been comic, and I think the total mortification of the 2 daughters was completely effective.

And if they had been at the ceremony there wouldn’t have been that great Nicki/Margene “what if” conversation…when Nicki talked about the life she would’ve had without Bill and says that " I made Bill happen", I began to think that she might have been instrumental in getting Bill back into polygamy and getting taken as his wife. Now I think she may have even manipulated Roman into making her part of some business deal.

Anyway, the thing that drives me crazy about the show is that they leave loose ends untied for a long time…what about Ben’s sex crazed little girlfriend, what’s up with Albee and the gay hustler and the knives and ropes, will Heather try to “rescue” Rhonda.

Well, I’m looking forward to the next season…I can’t wait to see how Pam and her hubby react when Margene starts showing. Unitl then, I can watch “reruns” on ON DEMAND, but that’s not the same as new ones.

I could be convinced of this. But so far, Bill’s main concern about being exposed as a polygamist has seemed to be the impact on his business. If Roman didn’t have his nose in Bill’s financial affairs, would Bill care what Roman was doing? Wouldn’t Roman have left Bill and his family alone if Bill had agreed to a percentage of the second store?

Do you think that their conflict is mainly personal, and Bill’s using the business as justification or rationalization for trying to bring Roman down?

I guess I haven’t thought too deeply about their motivations. I’m sorta of a what I see is what I get viewer.

In contrast to the finale of “The Sopranos”, "Big Love"s season ending episode was outstanding. It was both very funny and very poignant. The acting continues to impress me and its certainly good news that the show has been picked up for another season. I thought Wandas “secret” was unexpected and pretty damned scheming witch until Rhonda came along. Whoa, is that chick evil incarnate! I also agree there seem to be several loose ends I would like to see come together - like whats up with the friend played by that girl from “Napolean Dynamite” - you know the one with the State Trooper for a dad? I suspected she was a fed, though now that seems unlikely. Albies latent homosexuality, Bennies hot but manipulative girlfriend, and the nosy neighbor are all storylines I feel weren’t flushed out well enough. Hopefully there will be more next season! Barb sure fell several notches in my book for her actions in this episode. As soon as she heard that this was a position with lots of public attention she should have declined it - the very same way Bill declined the invitation into the Civic League (or whatever it was). I aslo have to say that in the beginning it really seemed as if Roman was just a monster with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. However with this physical assault on Albie I actually started to feel a little sorry for Roman. Weird right? Thats the great thing about this show, its not all black and white, there is lots of grey.

Grrrrr…I seem to have deleted part of a sentence by accident. Sorry for part of that post being incoherent.

I thought Wandas “secret” was unexpected and pretty damned ** hysterical all things considered. “Its just a cry for help” indeed! Nikki seemed like a** scheming witch until Rhonda came along.

Is it just me thinking that Wanda is totally batshit insane? Giving someone a drink of antifreeze–who does that? And then to be totally matter-of-fact about it, “It says that he’ll get drunk, pass out and then die”. Totally out of left field, although I could see her motivations for poisoning Bill’s father. As batshit insane as she apparently is, I’m not sure I’m seeing a good reason to leave her home alone with the new baby though. :dubious:

I loved that final scene when Barb, Margene and Nicki are all sitting together in the bedroom and they all look up at Bill standing in the doorway. Depending on your way of looking at the situation, it either conveyed the feeling of “We’re all in this together” or “Look what you’ve done to us, Bill.” Very powerful.

Oh it started as financial but its so far beyond that now. We’ve seen Roman threaten Bill’s family, evict his extended family from their homes, Bill’s found out that Roman may have killed his grandfather and certainly usurped his family’s place in the heirarchy of the church. Bill’s broken into Roman’s home, tried to pursue criminal precedings against him and Bill’s sister-in-law tried to kill his son.

It’s not about money anymore.

Barb said, “I got what I deserved,” and Nicki said, sympathetically, “Oh, Boss Lady.” Had to listen three times before I got it.

I liked it, but I think there’s a big gaping plot hole. Presumably the First Lady of Utah wants to avoid the embarrassment of having chosen a polygamist as Mother of the Year. The sensible thing to do would be simply to have chosen one of the two others, at random if necessary, and go on with the ceremony as if nothing had happened, and Barb was simple one of the two runners up. It doesn’t really cover the FLoU’s ass very well to draw attention to her having a polygamist as one of the finalists.

I agree. IT seems that wanting not to make a big deal of it they made a big deal of it. It would have worked if Barb was going to be honored along with the other two and they were the “Mothers of the Year” then I can see why they would need to pull her away. Otherwise, in context it didn’t make any sense.

I thought there was a not so sympathetic undercurrent in Nicki’s use of the phrase “Boss Lady”…and the phrase sure set Barb off.

That would have been my solution, but then it wouldn’t have made for very good entertainment due to the lack of humiliation and tension.

The funniest part for me was when the were offstage, and they decided to take her out the “back way”, which apparently involved walking right through the entire audience. What, was the paparazzi lined up outside this event or something?

If the family gets “outed” to the general public, and there is any hint that the FL and the MOTY people knew about it during the ceremony, it’s going to look pretty damn bad. And somebody out there knows that they know, because he called them. This way they can’t be accused in any way of tolerating polygamy.

I noticed that, too. That’s either bad scripting or bad editing. I’m guessing the latter.

Are you sure on that? I don’t know honestly. We listening to it a few times. The best I could come up with was, “well, mostly”, which would better explain Barb’s reaction.

to me she clearly said “boss lady” but I heard “No, boss lady.” where others hear “Oh, boss lady”

I sort of expect what I heard to be wrong (else I wouldn’t have listened to it several times). Still, does Nicki normally use “Boss Lady” when referring to Barb?

According to hbo.com it really is “Oh Boss Lady”.

[Mal]Huh.[/Mal]

I’ll agree that Rhonda acts like a scheming witch, but I think it’s because she’s a sexually abused teenager that has essentially been taken into white slavery for the rest of her life and her destiny is pretty damn grim. So I basically feel sorry for her, and I’m with Heather in being outraged that so many people know about her situation and condone it…even more so since she’s made it clear that she would rather not be living at Juniper Creek.

And I hope we get more backstory on Nicki, Barb and Bill. After hearing Nicki talk about what her life would’ve been without Bill I am starting to think she was instrumental in getting Bill and Barb into polygamy, being married to Bill sure beats living at Juniper Creek. And if Roman sweetened the deal for Bill…now I think Nicki may have even been behind that.

I can’t wait until next season.

I think you are mostly right… but… There’s been no hint that Rhonda has been sexually abused. She’s in pre-marriage to Roman. Once it is legal for her to get married they will and then the sex starts.
Rhonda isn’t so simple as to"rather not be living at Juniper Creek". She alternates between loving the status her marriage will give her and having bizarre fantasies about running away to New York.
