Yeah. And when did Bill get the flat fixed? He must have AAA or something.
They clearly showed them backing out and driving away in Margene’s car.
I’m not necessarily even clear on what The Principle is-- is it that there must be polygamy in order to fulfill God’s wishes and go on to Heaven? I’m not sure Margene buys into all that stuff on a religio-spiritual level. She does seem genuinely OK with Bill’s polygamy and acquiring new wives. I think it’s as close as she’s going to come to understanding the whole thing.
“The Principle” is more than a permission to take multiple wives, but a directive to do so. It’s considered a higher level of devotion, but you have to have a calling from God to practice it, IIRC. Hence, the references to the Holy Spirit in this episode.
What did you guys think of the strategic use of music on this ep? When Ana was jumping Bill, Avril Lavigne “I wanna be your girlfriend/ I think you need a new one,” and then 10cc “I’m not in love…” at the end of the show? Clever.
I wasn’t a fan of the inclusion of “Girlfiend,” but I guess it mirrored how Ana and Bill were getting it on like a couple of teenagers.
Mostly I just hate Avril Lavigne, though.

Agree. I had a “wtf” moment with the Avril Lavigne. I approved of 10cc’s “Not in Love,” though.
Another thing I noticed this ep: how many people on this show have worked with Tina Majorino on other projects?
–Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sarah, was Lilly Kane on Veronica Mars, and the kid who took Ben to the “straight-edge” rally played Beaver Casablancas. Tina played Mac on that show.
–Jeanne Tripplehorn was in Waterworld/ Tina was 10 when she was in that movie.
–Sandy Martin was in Napolean Dynamite. IIRC the people who made that movie were Mormons, and this show is about people practicing a form of Mormonism.
Maybe she’s the big acting hook up for the show? Or is this all just a coincidence?
A lot of other characters have, apparently, been on Veronica Mars according to my friend who’s a fan.
Also, Daveigh Chase (Rhonda) played the cute little sister in Donnie Darko and Amanda Seyfreid (Sarah) played the dumb one in Mean Girls. Versatile, aren’t they?
Loved this episode. I wonder what Nicki was planning to do with Rhonda if she talked her into leaving with her? Take her home? Take her back to the Compound? Take her out into the desert and leave her stranded on the side of the road? (That’s what I would have been tempted to do). Clearly, Rhonda is an example of conception through “Satan’s Thrust”. What a bitch.
I felt badly for Ana-she was simultaneously dumped by two people. I wonder if this means Margene has severed all ties with her? It just didn’t seem fair to Ana the way they dealt with it. I hope Margene didn’t totally dump her.
I loved Margene’s confession to Ana that she was a polygamist: “Some people meet one soulmate, I’ve been lucky enough to meet three.” I wonder if she really and truly counted Nicki in that three or was she including Ana?
This was a fantastic episode, although now people have pretty much already said everything I wanted to say.
I, for one, had no idea that Selma was a woman. (Insert your Simpsons reference here.)
I did think the attempted branding of Bill came out of nowhere and then was resolved way too easily. It’s one thing for people to be crazy violent. It’s another to be crazy violent because someone bought something you wanted to buy when they had no idea you even wanted to buy it; and then not even give them a chance to “make it right”.
But the attempted branding wasn’t resolved. Bill got out of it by claiming to have purchased the company on behalf of Roman Grant, but that was a lie. So will he hand the company over to Roman or what now? This new group is far more dangerous than the UEB.

I was wondering that, too. Only I wasn’t sure if she meant her sister wives and Ana or if she meant Bill and her sister wives. Sort of an interesting ambiguity.
Another question–who was the guy who was, literally, branded?

Wasn’t it the seller of the company, ie, Jim Beaver (Ellsworth from Deadwood).

It was already established that branding was one of that group’s terror tactics. They did it to the guy who is trying to sell the video poker business.

Yes, but that guy was someone who presumably did something consciously knowing he was screwing them.
By the way, who were the two women who burned the boat? And why did they do that?

Presumably part of Green’s enforcement agency. They were dressed similarly to the women in that weird warehouse (or whatever it was).
Oh, that’s right. :smack: Hollis mentioned that the company and the boat belonged to him.

It is screwing them over to sell to whomever he wants? I think Carter Reese (Jim Beaver) just didn’t do what Hollis Green demanded he do, even though it was within Reese’s rights to sell to Bill, so Green branded him in retaliation. Pure thuggery IMO. Actions like this are probably why Green had to flee to Mexico in the first place.

Right. I agree. Green told Reese to do something. Reese wouldn’t do it. So, to further intimidate him, Green branded him. That’s different from Bill having done something with absolutely no idea that Green was involved, and Green kidnapped him off the street and branded him without ever even bothering to threaten him or tell him not to do it first.

I’m not sure that’s quite right. Didn’t Bill offer some resistance at first when Green tried to tell him to get out of the deal?
BTW, since there’s so much Margene love this season, maybe some of you might want to check her blog on HBO’s website.
