Bigger Star: David Crosby or Jimmy Buffet?

I once worked at a beachy themed restaurant. Without fail, people would ask us to play “Margaritaville.” Buffett was always playing, mostly by request. How many restaurants can say that about Cosby?

We did, on occasion, “lose” that CD, however, we would play his less well-known stuff instead.

I would think more people go to the beach, have dreams of beachy lifestyles and therefore, have an affinity to Jimmy.

While I don’t consider myself to be a Parrothead, I can recite many of his songs by heart, including “God’s Own Drunk.” I could not name one song Crosby sings/sang/is known for. Growing up in Florida may have influenced that.

I did always want a little girl and when I got her, “Little Miss Magic” was what would bring me to tears.

Never understood the appeal of Buffett. His funny stuff doesn’t make me laugh, and his more serious stuff is musically boring.

But both the Byrds and CSN and sometimes Y are muscial touchstones, with countless influences and associations throughout rock.

That said … Buffett probably has a higher name-recognition. But that’s got nothing to do with musical quality. Lady Gaga probably has higher name recognition than either of them, right now.

Definitely Buffett, especially as a solo artist. Crosby is best known for CSN&Y; only a small cadre of fans know his solo work.

As to who is better, Crosby is probably a better musician. As for songwriting, I think Crosby is third to Stills and Young in CSNY. Buffett has a different style, but his songs are more memorable.

Jimmy Buffett, hands down. He has created a music genre all his own. What other 62 year old performer draws college kids by the boatload?
