Biggest Opening Weekend Box Office Predictions: The Dark Knight or Mama Mia!?

UPDATE
So, apparently, The Dark Knight didn’t pull in the estimated $60 - $63 million that Variety reported last night…

…it raked in $66.4 million dollars. They’re now projecting it to break the all-time 3 day record, and for all films this weekend to pull in $250 million. That’s a lot.

Two words: Christian Bale

Be my guest. I’m not talking about someone like you, I’m talking about the dickheads who are posting homophobic comments on the IMDB Mamma Mia! boards. Dejafreakin’Vu. Didn’t I just say that?

My friend reported on Mamma Mia!, “It was the gayest thing I’ve ever seen and I’ve been in gay brothels”.

I had no desire to see that movie, and always snickered at the ads for the play around town. “Based on the Music of Abba!”, which from my point of view, and for pretty much everyone I’ve ever known that is an anti-selling point. That is until the same friend told my wife that it reminds him and others of the relationship that she and I have. So now we’re both like, “Fuck you Jeff, we’ll have to see it when it comes on free On-Demand.”

On the other hand both of us really want to see, “The Dark Knight”, very badly.

BTW, record opening day earnings: 66m and record opening screen earnings 18m. Mamma Mia! won’t even rank near it.

My wife and I saw “Mamma Mia!” this evening, and we thought it was pretty good. Well, the story was kind of dumb, but the songs were great.

I have no desire to see “The Dark Knight”. In fact, superhero movies generally leave me cold.

Back when I was in high school, I was secretly a fan of ABBA. They were considered very uncool (and probably still are). It was nice to be in a theater full of people enjoying those songs.

Pierce Brosnan will get a Grammy for the soundtrack.

Sigh.

The link gives the box office information.

The Dark Knight earned $155 million and Mama Mia earned $28 million.

Damn, so it actually broke the record? That’s unbelievable. I’m calling it now, The Dark Knight will cross $450 million before all is said and done.

Hm, shame that Get Smart got bumped down to ninth place this weekend. It was my second favorite movie this summer and even Hancock is doing better.

I guess people are more likely to talk to their friends about interesting films than strong ones.

Any predictions on where the Dark Knight will finally land when all is said and done on the all time domestic box office chart?
