Two colleagues are happy with the Saris trunk racks.
My Golfs and Jetta had a Thule roof rack with upright Big Mouth attachments. Of course you need the Jetta-specific feet, which adds a few bucks. For the rack, two Big Mouths and locks, expect to spend $425-$475.
I’m not a fan of trunk racks for two reasons: fear of being rear-ended – and then, you know, bye, bye, Bianchi; and rearview interference. On the other hand, they’re relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
The roof rack can be tricky if you’re not particularly tall. You also must be conscious of the added height, particularly when – cough – entering a garage. (Don’t. Ask.)
Thank you for your help MERCY STREET. The rack is for my daughter and she does not want to lift the bike on a roof rack.
Thanks
Option: If your daughter has a quick release on the front wheel, it’s a snap to shove the bike into the Jetta, so long as she folds the rear seats. It would require little more strength than hoisting the bike on to the trunk rack. Bike goes into the trunk, rear wheel first with cassette facing up. Tilt the fork to accommodate the handlebars. Place detached front wheel on top.
I use a trailer hitch bike rack on my Saturn so I have full use of the trunk and can easily mount the rack when needed. If the seats fold down and it’s only one bike I would haul it that way. If the front wheel has to be detached than use a folded exercise mat as a buffer between the bike and wheel.
