You’re missing the point. Jesus matters to many modern Christians, particularly evangelicals, only as an idol, not as a teacher.
It’s akin to the concept of a buffet Catholic. All modern Christians follow some of Jesus’ teachings. Nobody follows ALL of them.
From that POV, Jesus-as-teacher, actually has been made irrelevant by many Christians to be replaced by Jesus-as-idol to be worshipped, even to the point of ignoring many of his teachings.
Now, how does this relate to Tebow? Well, while Tebow follows most mainline Christian precepts, he does appear to follow Jesus-as-idol more than Jesus-as-teacher. That is, his public actions appear to be more on the order of idol worship, rather than based on a deep, thoughtful consideration of what the actual teachings were.
Aaron Rodgers actually had some good comments on how his own faith relates to his behavior on the field and why he does not make such public displays. Here’s an article that summarizes much of it.
You’re wrong, demonstrably so. The cites I provided, those verses, were not Jesus preaching. They were prayers. The second was Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead–where are you getting that he was preaching? Here, I’ll show you again:
These are prayers. So was the thanks and blessing at the Last Supper, if you’re looking for another.
Be sarcastic about it all you like, doesn’t bother me none. But if you think that highlighting the words in the bible dictating that Christians shouldn’t pray in public is going to keep Christians from praying in public … well, I guess one more delusion isn’t going to hurt.
No, it’s not that at all. You don’t know me well enough to comment on what I’ve been taught. The Bible definitely addresses my wants and needs, I’ll grant you that.
Does he point to the sky after he mows the lawn? Or finishes his taxes?
I’m not sure what exactly to call it, but his actions (IMO) are definitely playing to an audience which tends to make me lose some respect. I know lots of people that feel strongly about their philosophy, but they don’t advertise it.
Which is exactly why he won’t. People like him feed on the bad feelings they generate in others. They need people to hate them. They need to be the center of that kind attention.
If your reason for disliking Tim Tebow is because he’s serious about his faith, that is more a reflection on your poor character than it is anything about Tebow.
Maher’s job doesn’t involve running around on a football field or wearing a team jersey. Tebow’s job doesn’t involve snarking about how much he hates religion. So there’s that.
